View Full Version : Announcing a SOLUTION to the "Machine Gun Effect"

Over the past couple of weeks (since I first discussed a technique for solving the "machine gun effect") Kevin Fletcher Tweedy ("KevinKauai" on most music Forums) and I have been collaborating on "codifying" the approach/technique and providing some solid documentation so that other folks might easily apply the benefit. Along the way, Kevin volunteered some excess bandwidth on one of his web sites and we began putting together an "info" page to "spread the word" on how to apply this technique in Kontakt 2.

We are now ready to release this INFO page, a Tutorial to go with it and 128 Patches that address some of the more problematic instruments in EWQLSO/Gold. Although these are offered "as is" (and "at your own risk") they appear to be solid and without problems. Though they address instruments that you would normally use in the included Kompakt player with EWQLSO/Gold, the initial group of 128 Patches supplied can only be used in Kontakt 2 because they use features which are not yet available in the version of Kompakt that Gold uses.

We have had additional assistance from enthusiastic Beta-testers who have given our "release" a basic "sanity check". We would, of course, appreciate the prompt reporting of any problems so that we can fix the "Info" page and Tutorial (and Patches, if need be).
Everything is now available starting with this page: http://www.kevintweedy.net/K2/info.htm

Note that we are encouraging folks who have Kontakt 2 and other sample packages to provide their "contributions" for the general good. We hope that others will take our example and send in Patches using this technique from which others may benefit.

Wonderful info, thanks very much.

Will this technique work for EWQLSO/Platinum?

It works just fine.

*BUT*

If you're mixing mic positions, there would be a problem: The random number sequence isn't guaranteed (being random and all that), so you'll get a different sequence of "articulations" in C, F, and S versions of a given patch.

I don't know Kontakt well enough to determine if there's a way to handle that. What I *really* want to learn about K2 (possibly in the scripting engine) is whether there's a way to simplify the management of mic positions within a multi, or even within a single NKI.

I have created a Kontakt 2 script that applies the "Machine Gun Elimination" methods.

The script allows the user to select four samples that will be tuned to the pitch of the pressed key. This is done by using the four offset knobs.

It is possible for the script to attempt to play samples that do not exist i.e. Notes above or below the available range. To correct this I have added two knobs; one to select the lowest available note and the other to select the highest available note. To help with this The number of the last note you played is displayed in the GUI.

There is also a dropdown menu to allow you to choose random or round-robin playback.

I would appreciate it if you would give me your opinions on the script.

P.S. The script only modifies the samples when two adjacent notes are the same e.g. If you play C1, D1, E1 the script won't do anything, but if you play D1, D1, D1 the second and third D1s will be a retuned samples of another notes. But it could be easily modifed to round-robin everything.

How completely rocking! (you know, in the staccato orchestral sense... :p)

I'm out of town at the moment, but I'll check it when I get back tomorrow. I wonder if this would work within a keyswitch, too...

Thanks,
Stefan

P.S. Your P.S. is great. Having that option is the perfect add-on, and it's good that it's an option. I think that Theo's initial demos showed that the effect of this idea on arpeggios is noticeable, as well.

So if I understand you correctly you would like an option to round-robin/random everything irrespective of whether adhacent notes are the same or not.

I have updated the script as requested and it now handles release layers as well.

Kevin has uploaded a collection of Kontakt 1.53 compatible Platinum round robin files here (http://www.kevintweedy.net/K2/content) which should also work in Kontakt 2 as well as the Kompakt Player.

If anyone could verify these files, please post your findings here (http://www.kevintweedy.net/K2/K2GuestComments.htm).

Thx

I have updated my script.

Latest version of the script (http://www.paulwaring.co.uk/mgk.nkp)
Plain text version of the script (http://www.paulwaring.co.uk/mgk.txt)
A brief PDF manual (http://www.paulwaring.co.uk/mgk.pdf)

I only have Gold Kompakt and I would like to try these files... :)
Does anybody know if the files mentionned will work on Gold (Kompakt) ?

Thanks,

Afroman

Sorry Afroman. These are Kontakt scripts. This is one of the main reasons I got Kontakt--it's really a great tool and the scripts do work very well.

I keep offering to send somebody a coffee ring or something for posting this massively useful code, but no one has taken me up on it.

Theo? Kevin? You guys all on an Atkins/South Beach/South Pacific/Down Under diet or what?

:)

Sinkd,

If you are using the K2 scripts which one are you using? The script solution to the Machine Gun Effect was started on another forum. There were two scripts written, one by myelf and one by Jay Coover (aka Fizbin). Bob Villwock (aka Big Bob) took ideas from our scripts refined them and added some nice features. Bob's script is now the best and you can get it here.

Thanks Paul,

Concerning useing the TKT patches versus the Script, has anyone found or know of the advantage(s) / disadvantage(s) of useing one over the other?

Sorry Afroman. These are Kontakt scripts.
Actually, they're .nki patches. They can be loaded into Platinum Kompakt as well as Kontakt 1.5. Apparently they don't work in the Gold player though.
