View Full Version : Using EWQLSO as a plugin with SONAR

This question probably has been asked a few dozen (hundred?) times in the past. However, I'm a newbie, so please bear with me...

I recently acquired EWQLSO Gold Pro Bundle; this package currently is installed on my PC along with SONAR6 Producer Edition. I would like to use EWQLSO as a plug-in with SONAR6, but I'm unable to configure the software properly.

First, I prepare a midi file of a live performance, which I save and then edit as necessary to remove the inevitable clinkers. Next, this midi file is inserted into a SONAR midi track. In the past, I have used this approach successfully to create an audio (wav) file in SONAR by using LiveSynthPro, which allows me to select among various SoundFonts. So far, so good.

When attempting to load EWQLSO, I go to an Audio track and assign EWQLSO as my vst plugin; the EWQLSO user manual says something about "DXi 2", but SONAR seems only to recognize EWQLSO as a vst plugin.

Next, I would hope to assign the bank and track, just as I do when loading LiveSynthPro, in order to produce the desired instrumental sound. However, no listing of instruments pops up, so I'm unable to assign a particular instrument sound to my midi track for playback through EWQLSO. This is the point at which my past experience with LiveSynthPro no longer applies.

I'm hoping that I might obtain some pointers from an experienced EWQLSO-SONAR user. Thanks in advance for your help.

I don't use Sonar yet, but this is how it's usually done:

You first need to find your VST instruments list and load a Gold plug-in in your DAW.

Once that's done, in the MIDI track properties you need to select the proper output. In your case, it's EWQLSO Gold (there will only be one instance at that point).

Then you need to load an instrument in whichever slot in your player you wish and choose the MIDI channel for that slot in the player (just leave it on default - channel number is the same as the slot number by default).

Then you need to choose the right MIDI channel for the MIDI track to connect to the right instrument.

If you want to audition the instrument by playing on a keyboard, you will need to choose something like a "monitor" option or turn on the record (this is all from Cubase, I don't know about Sonar).

You mention going to Audio track and choosing EWQLSO, did you mean MIDI track?

However, I've heard Sonar sometimes having problems with VST in the past, so this might be one of those issues and not have anything to do with the routing.

I have Sonar 7 and I do the following:

Create an empty project. Go to - insert - soft synths - NI - then select Gold XP

Select the following options in the next pop up screen:

Create these tracks - select the first 3 options
Open these windows - select both options

Kompakt will pop up and you can select the 8 instruments you want

In your project you will see now a synth track and a midi track

Choose insert midi track (the amount you want - 8 max for this multi) - do the same steps again if you want more multis

Make sure that at the left side of your screen at the bottom you select output at the display

Select the midi track and select at output for each midi track you select Kompakt or Gold XP (I use kontakt so not sure how it displays) and at the channel choose 1-8

Good luck :)

Yep - exactly what JaapVisser said. Here's a screenshot that may also help - Sonar's folders tracks are also a nice benefit - being able to keep each virtual instrument instance organized within is really helpful on large, complex projects:

Thank you for this post and the replies, a huge help

This is like a quick guide, for dummies, all you wanted to know to get started resource post.

Better then any how to video or college text book I’ve seen -LOL-

When I installed my EWQLSO libraries, I was given the option to install the DXI or VSTi, I choose DXI because I have had good experiences with SONAR and DXi in the past. Not sure whether you can install both, but it looks like you installed the VSTi version. The process for inserting the EWQLSO and using it in SONAR is the same for both... just as Jaapvisser and deprogrammed explained.

Good luck.

I've found that, in Sonar, when you insert a soft synth and choose the NI version as opposed to VST, it will cause "hang-ups" (the note is sustained) if there are tempo changes during that note.

This happened on a machine with Sonar 4 installed, so I don't know if this has been fixed in more recent update since I now only use virtual instruments as VSTs

You can install and use both dxi and vst versions. I believe most people find the vst versions to be more stable, though I haven't heard much one way or the other with Sonar 7. I know Sonar vastly improved vst functioning in the last two versions.

I do have some quirky things happening with SONARs Audio Metronome. Have had the same problems on two different machines. Maybe I should install and load the VST version and try it out... couldn't hurt, right? I'm wondering if I'll have to go through the whole registering process with NI if I just install the VST version after already installing the DXi...?

By the way, we never heard whether Alan got his SONAR working....

I like to assume it's working perfectly and he's so productive now that he doesn't have time to let us know....

I think you can just do the portion of the install where you install the vst drivers. Should only take a minute. You may even be able to manually install them. Just make sure you remember where you put them so you can tell Sonar where to look.

Hi there. Im new here. Found this thread and did not find the screenshot, sorry. Please can you insert it anew?
Even though I am runnning Sonar 4 PDE... But the question is the same.
Note: When I go to "insert" Sonar does not give me "NI", but rightaway EWQLSOGold, and I can actually use either DXi of VST, But I can't get to selecting instruments in a MidiChannel.

Another option I have is that of ProTools L.E. 3.03, but I can't find the necessary RTAS connection Protools is asking for.
Any idea, please?
And: Is there an actualized manual for EWQLSOGold Edition for download, please?
Thanks :violin:

Hi there,
I have git Sonar 4 P.E. and a quite similar question. Anyway, I do not think assiging the EWQLSO Gold to an AUDIO track is the right thing to do. Isn't EWQLSO Gold a SoftSyth, technically? I would assing only sound effects to an audio track.
Even though this thread seems to be pretty old, I try out here...
