two greats for orchestration in general (not specifically MIDI) are Adler's "The Study of Orchestration" and the Rimsky-Korsakov book.

But you may be specifically looking for midi instruction. To me it seems like there are so many apps out there and so many different potential workflows that an author would be hard-pressed to give you a fair, balanced treatment that is the most relevant for your particular apps, unless maybe you seek out books dedicated to your apps?

Try "Acoustic and midi orchestration for the contemporary composer" by Andrea Pejrolo and Richard DeRosa published by Focal Press. Itīs quite good.

EXACTLY what I would reccomend, if you can afford about 300 bucks or so get the adler book and the cd set that goes with it and the workbook, the 3 combined is just an amazing amazing resource. I am known to gift them to copyists/orchestrators that do some work for me
