View Full Version : Getting separate instruments in Logic/Kompakt

Okay, I know this may be a no-brainer but I need a complete idiot's guide to doing this in Logic's environment.

For some time now I've been fooling Logic by choosing an AudioInstrument in Logic (say AudioInstrument 1) and putting an instance of Kompakt in there. Then I would go to AudioInstrument 2 and change the midi track from 1 to 2, to AudioInstrument 3 and change the midi track from 1 to 3, etc, until I did 8. Then I would go back and change each of these AudioInstruments from 1-8. Cool? Well it lets me do QLSO Kompakt in Logic.

Drawbacks

Each of these instruments are now part of collective, like Borg Drones, sucked of every trace of individuality. If I latch a fader all eight faders move. If I add EQ or compression all eight get identical FXs. Aarrgggghh!!!

Out of sheer laziness I haven't gone into the dreaded environment but I'm left with little choice (unless I have a multi for every blasted instrument in the mockup.) I've seen explanations here and on NS that were mercurial at best and simply confusing at worst. Can someone here please tell me how to get each instrument in a multi to behave like the separate instruments they are, and dealt with individually? (fader movements, automation, eq, compression, etc.)

I would REALLY appreciate someone explaining this in detail in steps. Thanks!

I have done it successfully a couple of different ways:

1. In the Environment, create a muti instrument and cable it to 1 audio instrument and 7 aux instruments (or 15 aux instruments if you are using Kontakt instead of Kompakt). Each instrument should be set to a different midi channel. In the Arrange window enable the Muti Instrument tracks and this is where your sequences go. Also enable the audio instrument and aux instrument. This is where you can control the parameters of each channel. Drawback is you use twice as many tracks in the Arrange window.

2. In the Environment, create a muti instrument and cable it to 1 audio instrument. Set the audio instrument's midi channel to "all". In the Arrange window enable the channels of the multi instrument - this is where your sequences go.

There are also objects in the Environment called Transformers. In each of the above scenarios I use 1 or 2 Transformer between the Muti Instrument and the Audio Instrument and Aux. Instruments. This is a little hard to explain in words. There are many posts on this topic on the various forums which cover Logic. So if you dig around a bit, you should be able to find a complete step by step description. Some even have screenshots.

Here are some of the forums where I have found info on this and other Logic related issues:
Northern Sounds (http://northernsounds.com/forum/index.php?)
Sonik Matter (http://community.sonikmatter.com/forums/index.php?)
Apple Logic Forum (http://discussions.info.apple.com/webx?14@163.rXhFa3FMyHg.0@logic)
Logic Users Group (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/logic-users/)
Sonic Control (http://www.soniccontrol.com/cgi-bin/ubbcgi/ultimatebb.cgi)

A guy with the user name "shnurgle" did a lot of work on this. He posts on this forum and also on Sonik Matter. You might try to send him a PM.
