What would you expect to get financially speaking from the orchestration of a song?
A songwriter asked me to put a full orchestral background to 3 songs he has composed, on top of a regular band set up already recorded.

What percentage should I expect from it? It hasnt been published yet, and I think it will go through online stuff.

Cheers for any advice.

American Federation of Musicians union page rates for orchestration range from $26 to $60 depending
on the size of the orchestra and the project budget.

Typical rates for premium orchestrators can range from $75 to $100 per page depending on the project
budget and the complexity of the music.

Thx for this Allan.
But the figures you indicated are to be considered a one-off remuneration for the writing of scores or is there a percentage you can claim from each time the song is purchased on iTunes??
Cheers

I would think whatever you can negotiate. Things to consider I would imagine is if he's a friend or is this a relatively unknown party coming to you for your orchestration skills. I would think maybe charging a PER song fee and then start high with a percentage and work your way backwards. Your work should contribute a substantial amount to the finished piece so make sure your percentage reflects that.

Forget federations and all that stuff, just tell him what all that work will cost and hammer out a price, he will of course say "oh thatīs much too much" so think about what you need add on 20% and then let hom knock you down and at the end of the day you will both come out happy, thatīs business right? youīre selling a service. Good luck Chris
