MIDI playback question
Using East West SO Gold original version in Pro Tools LE version 7.4. I only use the free Kontakt player that came with the library.
So, I have seen many versions of this question, but I’m still not clear. So I’m going to ask my questions, and give a couple of examples of how I “think” they should be played back. Please let me know if I’m totally wrong here.
So, I want to play a MIDI line. Let’s keep it simples. One track, a violin performance. ¼ notes for 4 BARs and then fast 1/16 notes for 4 bars. So if I wanted to have some articulations, then have one note with an up bow, the next note with a down, etc. Then I want to use a slower articulation for the ¼ notes, then a faster for the 1/6 notes.
1) I open EWOS in my MIDI track and open one sound set channel 1, say one of the up bows. Then In channel 2, one of the down bows, channel 3 slow attached, channel 4 fast. Do I have to take all the notes (every other MIDI note) that I want to play an up bow on, and put those notes on one track, and the down bow notes on a second track, etc. Or can I build an instrument in the free Kontact player, that has different samples being triggered by different velocities, or multiple samples triggering? Thanks all

1) There is no free Kontakt player. The one that comes with Gold is called "Kompakt". That might save you some later confusion.

2) You can put the different articulations on different tracks/channels. Or, depending on what sequencer you use, you can put them all on the same track. That's what I do with Sonar.

What sequencer do you use?

I'm using Pro Tools as a sequencer. I guess I'm asking if there is a way to customize instruments in the free Kompakt player that comes with EWSO, or do I need to upgrade to a full version. And, anyone have a recommendation for a samples to use in Pro Tools that can load the EWSO library?

Hi there!

If I've understood you correctly, this is what you want to do:
Use the same Kompakt-player for different articulations, and insert it on an instrument track,
and then have free access to them from the same track?

if so, I think I have bad news for you... as far as I'm concerned (not 100% sure), Pro Tools aren't able to route single notes to different midi-channels (cause that's what you gotta do, assign the articulations to different channels..but you allready knew that..?)
Instead, you have to use several midi-tracks that send on different channels for the different articulations - which means your session will indeed look a bit messy. I know there are sequencers out there that are able to handle what I described, but I don't think Pro Tools is one of them.

Regarding the sampler - My experience is that Kompakt is WAY more power-hungry than it should be.. a nice alternative would be Kontakt - which operates smoother, and demands less resources (at least in my opinion). allthough, there are several other ones that are able to load Kompakt/Kontakt patches.
Or do like me - wait for PLAY to get released! ;)

Thanks for the info. I was just reading about PLAY. Looks awesome. Hope they offer the upgrade for my EWQLOS Kompakt version! :)
