Hi,

My name is Jan Bruijn and I live in the Netherlands. I am a amateur musician.

I am totally new with respect to sample libraries etc. I bought the platinum bundle because it was at a very actractive price and I want to experiment with this way of creating music. Sofar I used synthesizers like the MOTIFES8 and the TYROS 2 from Yamaha.

I did not install the EWQL software yet, but did some reading in the manual. The first thing I read in that manual was, that if you want to do some serious orchestra work, you need at least 4 computers or better is 8 computers to get the job done. One for each group, like strings, brass etc. I have no idea what that ment, how do those 4 or 8 computers working together (via ethernet?) and how do you get the sound from each computer together to assemble an orchestra (a big mixer maybe)?

I thought my new 3 GHz PC with duo processor and 4 Gigabyte of RAM and two 500 gigabyte 7200 rpm gard discs should be enough.

I wonder does a quad processor makes sense. Does the EWQL supports duo or quad processing?

So, I hope to get some advises via this forum to help me out with these questions, before I start installing the whole lot .

Anyway thanks inadvance for some suggestions or moral support in this.

Jan

Hi Thomas,

Nice to see your face again. I hope everything is well with you, the family and the kids?

Sooner or later I have to install that EWQL platinum bundle. I think I will start with the basic EWQL library first to get some feeling how that software works. I still have some hesitation to start with that package as a synthesizer person. Oh well, maybe it is not that difficult.

Welcome Jan. I don't think you'll have much problem with the EWQL stuff. Lots of good people here to help with your questions.

Hi Jan. YOu should be ok unless you feel the need to open almost every instrument at once. If you have like five or six instruments you should be ok. You can always freeze you tracks. (turn them into audio tracks) although that's kind of the cheap way but hey, it works.

I think you use a special program like EX Teliport or something and yeah I think you may be able to use iethernet since you can send pretty much anything through it. I'm not sure how to do the audio. I wonder the same thing... I, for one, am a college student in the US and don't have lots of money to spend on hardware so I only have one computer. Your CPU is better than mine's though and I've opened about six or seven instruments with effects in Cubase 3 within Kontakt so you should be ok.

I'd get slave machines, but I'd need some small computers to do it plus I don't know how to do it.

Again, nice to meet you!

Welcome Jan - good to see another fellow Dutchman. ;-)

As to your question about EWQL, I recently purchased the platinum pro xp edition of the symphonic orchestra bundle. At first, I had them on a separate external hard disk, hooked up to my laptop (dual core 1.6 GHz, 1 GB RAM). That didn't work too well though - my laptop could not handle the volume of the libraries. So I upgraded my hardware by purchasing a new standalone slave computer (rack mounted) with a 2.4 GHz quadcore pentium IV processor, 4 GB RAM, and three hard disks (250GB + 500GB + 500GB). All software is installed on the C boot drive, the instrumental libraries are on the D drive, all vocal libraries (symphonic choirs, voices of passion) are on the E drive. Master and slave are connected through FX Teleport and a network cable. This works pretty well - my problem right now is getting the libraries to work with Sibelius (my notation / sequencing program that I really love but which is not set up out of the box to work with the libraries). FX Teleport can, by the way, be used to expand to multiple computers in a network. If, for example, you find that running strings and brass on one computer is too much to handle, you could opt to install the brass library on a different computer, as another slave, hooked up to the master through FX Teleport.

Since you already a pretty powerful computer, if I were you, I would just install it on your present computer and see how it works. If it doesn't, you can always uninstall it and move it over to a new computer. What you read in the manual refers to a situation of a few years ago - computers keep getting more powerful so today's computers can handle a lot more than those of even one or two years ago.

Hope this helps.

Take care,
Peter
