Hello all,

The name's Ryan Hunter. Studying Jazz trumpet performance as well as classical guitar performance at the University of Utah. My real interest is composition...I'm doing performance simply because in my opinion it will give me a more thorough insight to arranging, having spent years playing in various ensembles.

Though I have a few years of composition under my belt already (mostly orchestral scores for local amateur short films), I have always left the studio work to others. And on top of that, I've never worked with MIDI at all. All my compositions so far have been recorded by local orchestras, recording it live with protools hooked up to the concert hall's mixer, with only house mics. And again, I just conducted, and left the recording and mixing to others.

I wish to change that though, and wish to break into the MIDI orchestration world. Firstly, because I want a way to make realistic recordings for marketing sake. And secondly, because I'm sick of having nothing but sibelius' default softsynth to hear my work as I'm writing it.

I haven't yet purchased any gear, and won't for another few weeks. My budget is ~$5000-5500, and am spending these few weeks doing as much research as possible to figure out how to best use that budget. I've already posted a possible setup on the Helpful Hints section, and am looking for as many brutally honest opinions as possible, so that when I do spend the $5k, i do it right. The only thing I have set in stone so far is that i'll be starting off with EWQL Complete Composer's Collection, and Cubase 4.

Thank you, :)

Ulfrinn

Welcome Ryan, nice to have you here in the forums. I think you'll find most of the answers you seek here, I don't know how brutal they will be, but honest indeed.
