I was gonna ask on the cubase forums, but you have to own it to register there, so I'll ask here, since once I do purchase it i'll be using it with EWQL libraries.

What are the practical differences between Cubase 4 and Cubase 4 STUDIO?
("practical" as in what are the differences that directly apply to usage with EWQL libraries)

I read descriptions of each, but did not see much difference generally, so i figured i'd ask people who have used either, since they'll know of the details that you don't find in descriptions.

I have Cubase 4 studio and it works very well with EWQL products. There is a comparison chart on the steinberg site. The main difference is the ability to do surround sound.

Ah didn't see the comparison chart last time i looked. Found it now, and got what i needed to know. Thanks!

Yes, Cubase 4 Studio works great, and I'm very satisfied, latest PLAY updates also fixed some main PLAY problems in C4. No problems with Kompakt versions.

C4S also does not have some cool tempo/time options, which are very useful when working with picture. I'm planning to upgrade to C4, mainly because of the surround support. And higher number of VSTI slots.

Sounds like C4S is the way to go, especially since the upgrade to C4 price is the same as the difference between the two, so no wasted money if you start off with studio. Anyone happen to know what the limits are on the educational version of C4?

You can't use it, if you are making money with it.

Simply.

The Educational version is exactly the same as the full version. It just comes in a different box.

The other thing to note about Studio, is that AFAIK the free routing does not exist in this product, so if you need that then get C4.

That's not true. You just have to fulfil the criteria. That's all.

daryl?

This stands true though in EW products, right? Most companies do forbid the commercial use of edu products... I was pretty sure that Steinberg was the same... :S

Steinberg doesn't say anything about the commercial use, EWQL educational discounts do specifically mention no commercial use. Only reason I asked about features is that 50% off C4 just for being in school seemed too good to be true haha.

Hm... too bad, I didn't know about this at the time I bought C4S. I could get C4 instead. Oh, never mind, I got a full version of C4S a lot cheaper anyway.
