No you don't necessarily need a record label for doing that.

For a similar reasons some artists need producers/publishers. So labels are not mandatory, just useful -- access to resources such as recording facilities and pro engineers, plus better marketing tools, like advertising, distribution, etc.

I've found a really nice service called "TuneCore" that will get your music set up in the major internet music stores, such as iTunes, AmazonMP3, Napster, Rhapsody ect....they are not that expensive, but offer a convient way to get your music up for sale without a major label backing. For more information, goto their website and read up on them........

I signed up with them last week, and hope to see my music up for sale sometime in the couple of months.

I also have a site on SoundClick, where I can sell mp3's of my music....check it out below.....

I'm gonna have to say yes you need a record label if you want to sell CDs. The market for CDs has never been worse, and a single, independent guy simply cannot produce the kind of PR it takes to sell a decent amount of CDs these days. Occasionally we hear the story about someone who has become succesful by having a MySpace profile or doing a YouTube-video etc., but it's an extremely difficult (and unlikely) way to become rich and famous. And the majority of these people are signed immediately by a major label! ;)
If you want to sell music on the Internet, follow djwayne's advice. I spent 4 years of my life selling my music on the Internet - very hard work. 2 million downloads later I had made around $6-7000. Yeehah! :D
Thomas.

Yes, you can get a free website at SoundClick, You can also upgrade to a VIP site, that has no advertising banners on your page, better quality downloads and a few more benefits, but I still have the free site, and it's working fine for me. I've already sold a couple of mp3's there...
What's really nice about SoundClick, is you can upload your songs and they get posted immediately, you can edit them anytime, you can sell them and change the price anytime, you can edit your artwork as needed... they also have music charts there that show how well your music is doing compared to other music. They also have a stats page that keeps track of your page visits, song plays, and downloads. It really is a user friendly site.

They get advertising revenue off of ads on your site, plus they hope you'll sign up for a VIP site for around $10 a month, last time I looked.
Check out my site and you'll see the advertisements I'm talking about.

After you get so much, at least $10, they put it into your PayPal account. I would suggest you go to the SoundcClick website and take the tour. There's a lot to know, and it takes a while to become familiar with the website, but once you're up and running, it's great.....

Hehehehe.. I double posted over there for the benefit of the people who post at Audiomasters, and not here. It's a different crowd for the most part. I wanted to tell them about Tunecore, and how cool the program is.

I uploaded my music to TuneCore on April 16th and it showed up on Amazon.com in about ten days, and iTunes on May 2nd, and today on Groupie Tunes, (ringtones) so in a matter of a 2-3 weeks, I'm all over the place !!!
I'm ecstatic with TuneCore, they really did a great job getting the music posted !!

As of this Monday, TuneCore is now accepting single songs for internet distribution to all their stores for $9.99.
I tried this out and my single was posted on Amazon and Napster in TWO DAYS !!!!! The other stores will be posting sometime soon also.
