View Full Version : Key Switches short and long

I think I'm missing something. Before I upgraded to Gold XP (from Gold), the keyswitches (say for solo cello) contained both long and short samples. So, with one midi melody line, you could switch between long and short from note to note. Now, with the keyswitches in Gold XP, they're either long or short. So am I right that the only way to have a solo (cello) line that contains both long and short samples is to split the notes into two tracks? Does this make sense? There must be a way to use one midi track and have both long and short key switches. I don't think EW would go backwards, so I think I must be missing something. I'll go back to the manual tonight and reread the section on key switches, but if anyone understands what I'm saying, would you please reply...
Thanks for all!

It has always been this way for me... creating two tracks per string instrument, one for the short KS and one for the long KS. Pain in the ass. I wasn't even aware that they used to combine short and long articulations into a single keyswitch in EW products. That would be pretty handy.
Sorry I can't offer a solution, but I too would like to know the rationale for splitting the long and short keyswitches.

Thanks for the reply. Yeah, I'm pretty sure that in Gold and Silver (not XP or Pro) the Keyswitches included both long and short. Not sure of the rationale for splitting them up, but knowing EW, it was probably for a good reason... I guess I'll just have to create the track using a simple sample, then copy and paste and apply a different keyswitch sample to each and go from there, deleting the notes in the tracks I don't want...
Thanks again.

You're absolutely right... the older KS files did include both short and long articulations and the Gold XP ones were split into the two groups.
I think that if you're using K2 or K3, you can actually build your own keyswitches, though I'm a bit sketchy on how to go about actually doing that. If you're using Kompakt, then there's not much you can do.
To be honest, I don't find the short KS file to be all that useful. They are decent since you get a variety of playing styles, but they only utilize 2xRR samples and you'll probably end up using up more RAM for articulations that you won't use. For added realism you're much better off using the individual patches with the 6xRR or more.
Hope this helps,
- Matt

As always, Matt. It does help. Thanks. Yeah, I'm using Kompakt.... but I've bought the upgrade to Play, so maybe I'll be able to do something with that...
Cheers, and thanks again.
