Hi,

my question for you is: What musical instrument do you wish you could play?

I play guitar, bass, drum and keyboard. Guitar and bass are the instruments that I play better but my favorite musical instrument is the drum.

When I write music I like to use my nylon guitar altough I've written many songs with piano.

At the jam sessions I could play one of the 4 instruments but the drum...I love playing drum with a band.

So what would you like to play? Guitar, Bass, drum, piano, keyboard, strings, horns?

Why?

What musical instrument catch your attention when you are in concert? Why?

please be specific.

Thank you,

Andrea

Hi there! Considering I just started playing the Piano, that's the instrument I'd love to be able to play well sometime. Pianos and synthesizers are also the instrument that catch my attention at concerts. Seeing what Jordan Rudess gets out of his OASYS at Dream Theater concerts (I attented one last October) is just incredible!

Other than that, I would really like to have a try with drums. There's something about very rhythmical playing that fascinates me. Plus, I like the thought of moving all parts of your body independently. Played well, drums can also contribute hugely to the mood of a song. Drummers like Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater), Phil Collins (he's pretty good at using drums to give his songs a certain feel; see In The Air Tonight, for instance), and of course Gavin Harrison (Porcupine Tree; I was fortunate enough to be able to see them live last... November, I think it was) all contribute so much to the music of their respective bands.

Finally, Guitar would be nice. Sitting around a camp fire, singing, is always nice. :)

I'd wish to play any instruments that I don't already play (that's to say, a lot !! :p).
I play guitar, a bit bass and drums, and I'm learning mandolin (my girlfriend offered me one for my birthday that's pretty cool ! :D ).
So I'd wish to play piano, cello, harp, banjo, violin, flute, bassoon, etc....
I love all sounds so there is not one particular that I'm addicted to so I'd like to learn every instrument... :)

Now I tell you something.

I really would like to learn sax or trumpet but the problem is that I hate the salive in the instrument. Especially I hate that tap that sax has to take out the saliva!!! :) I know that it's sad.

I remember that when I was in school my vote in music was really sad because the teacher forced us to play flute!!! One day I forgot my flute at home and my friend said to me: Andrea, would you like to use my flute? I was almost vomiting!

To avoid jokes I would like to clarify that my friend was talking about the musical instrument called flute!!! :) ahahah

I would love to play any of the instruments in the orchestra. I am confined to the guitars and keys, I'm afraid.

Oh Andrea - now you really opened a pandora box!!

My answer is: I would like to be able to play every instrument on this planet --- oh yes! I am a classical guitar guy by training (conservatory of music graduate), but I would just looooove to be able to be a good piano / keyboard player, or a great fiddler, or to kick some ass on the sax (Giant Steps! John Coltrane) or muted trumpet (Miles Davis! round midnight) -- however I am afraid I will have to keep struggling on my guitars, and with my virtual instruments.

ps also, I would also like to be a REALLY good classical guitar player - like Pepe Romero, or Julian Bream, or John Williams (not the composer, the guitarist) - kicking it with the Concierto d'Aranjuez. Oh yeah ...

ps by the way, I would also love to be able to be really great singer - like the late Pavarotti, God bless his soul - check out his '70s recordings of the great Donizetti operas with Dame Sutherland - bellissimo!! However I sing like s*** - unfortunately that is the reality.

What musical instrument do you wish you could play?

Why?
French horn.

Because it sounds awesome, that's why -- what any other reason could be for wanting to play an instrument? :)

Ah - yes- cello- we were recording live cello today.. I just couldnt get enough of listening to it. So sweeeet. Even with 5 microphones and wearing headphones you still couldnt beat sitttng in the room right in front of the player.

There's a difference between being able to play an instrument and being able to "play" an instrument.

So for me, anything really. Except perhaps the kazoo. I've never really fancied that.

I never really cared for the Jews Harp or the swinette.

Clarinet. Don't know why really, I've always loved the sound of it. Especially in jazz music.

I play the guitar , bass guitar , keyboard and drum but my main instrument is the guitar.

I also would like to learn sax.I like this instrument, that was my first choice when I was young but in the school where I was , they were no more sax to rent.

I tried the violin , so hard , no fret on it and also the contrabass with a bow and I like it , but I can't own every instrument...unfortunately

Vocals would be my first choice to do well, then probably piano (at this point I'm still counting whole-step, whole-step, half-step) and cello.

I had a series of recurring dreams where I played the cello, and got a little better each time. Each time I awoke, I felt certain that if I only had one beside my bed, I could, at least for a few moments, play it perfectly.

OneThrow, hey... don't be hatin' the kazoo. When I was in high school, I skipped my Spanish class for a week and sat in with the band. I couldn't play anything at the time, so someone brought me a kazoo, and I followed the tuba line all week (you know, almost all whole notes, lots of breaks).
On Friday, one of the classmates told the teacher it was National Kazoo Day, and said that I had a solo prepared. So in the middle of a song, to my surprise, she stopped everyone, and asked me to play the solo I supposedly had ready.
Trying to think of something funny to do, I announced that my performance was in three movements. I played the first movement as one note carried for a few measures. I played the second movement exactly the same, but "with more feeling" - as I announced beforehand. For the third movement, I played Flight of the Bumblebee, and received a standing ovation.
It was promised that if I decided to skip Spanish the next week, I would be promoted to the triangle.

Of course, I flunked Spanish that year. I should have stayed in band.

Sorry for the long post in a light thread, all. :)

Two trains of thought here.

For composition reasons, I'd say drums. Sequencing drums creatively has always been difficult, especially trying to get that exact power or intensity. Modules like SD help, but when looking to customize something intricate and specific, having a strong background in drum performance would really help.

For reasons of pure pleasure, I'd say oboe. There's nothing so lilting and beautiful as a weeping oboe solo rising above an orchestra.

I am a pianist and organist, but now that I entered the magic world of film music, I would love to be able to showcase skills on authentic eastern world percussions, eg huge taikos etc...

Phenomenal stuff ...

Absolutely! And you should see how chaste our kisses have become.

I'm not even going to segue those into trills... double-tongue.....

Back to the subject, I want to add oboe now that someone(s) else mentioned it.

...and I'd love to be able to play SC well... :)

I play violin and viola professionally, but I've always wished I had better keyboard skills. I just can't seem to get my hands to work that way.

Currently I'm harboring a secret wish to learn to play the Chapman Stick, because I think it looks cool!

Of course, the French horn is actually German, and the English horn is an angelic oboe. Someone mentioned the "Jew's harp," which is not Jewish nor is it a harp. Also, pizza is not Italian but Indian, as the "Arabic" numbers are. Gypsies are Indian too, and not Egyptinas. Many will hate to hear that, but America is the name given to what today is called South America, and was later extended also to the northern part of it. But people are not interested in knowing the truth, they prefer to stick with their misleading conventions.

End of names OT.

Id love to be able to play the piano well. My Dad tried to teach me as a kid but I was too lazy and stupid to take advantage of it. Instead I would just spend hours fooling around with chords and things I liked the sound of so now I can play a bit but can't play really well or read music.

Never too old eh?

big regret.

And I am touched by the looks of your horn. You are a lucky fellow being able to play it. I tried once and got dizzy...
