I have recently been approached by a start-up production music library company to represent my work. I would like to hear some of your experiences working with start-ups good, bad, or ugly. i personally think its a good risk to get in with a company at ground level!

Yes if they are fair and honest, so donīt get too excited at what might appear to be a wonderful opportunity, if theyīre not what they say they are it may all end up beings Sucks !! Take your time Pietro donīt just jump in. ;)

They can be rewarding... but just know even a successful production music library can take a few years to really start making an impact. Just make sure you are getting a good deal out of it... as new libraries should be offering you typically a better deal then an established one normally would. Building a relationship with a good library can be a great source of income for any composer.

UM, this is the music upload section, isnt it?
If you're having trouble navigating this forum, then i would be very worried
about how you'd do in the music buisness world.
Its much more demanding.
LOL :)

Thanks, for the advice to those who gave it. Todd - only women start phrases with "um". and Sp3ctre, listen to what I mean not what I say idiot, and get rid of that stupid 3, go play with your X-box and leave the music to the musicians.
And that ridiculous youtube video Todd, come-on....I've studied with students of Segovia and could out play you while getting a root canal.
With Love,

Hey pietro, what up? Woke up crabby today? That was totally uncalled for.
Todd was just joking; he shouldn't have bothered you any.
And I don't know what problem you had with my question. I'm ASKING what it means. I'm asking what "production music library" means. Simple. And yes, i'm not a musician, I'm a composer. :D

I'm asking what "production music library" means.
Production music libraries are samples of music in various different genres that are used for commercials, TV shows, corporate demos, et cetera - since the music doesn't have to be produced it is a fast way for companies (and usually a little less expense) to get music for shows etc.
For composers and musicians placing your music can be a good source of income, all depending on how prominent the music library company is, what contacts they have in the business, and so on.
To the first poster: I would maybe check them out, check their references, perhaps contact TAXI if they ever heard of them, etc, do a little due diligence.

Peter,
Thank you. The lead actually came through TAXI. I've signed contracts with other start-up library companies but it does take a while for their catalogues to be released and actually land some jobs. That's the dilemma; do I let my work sit with them for 1 year and hope they can get it placed or wait for a larger company which can place quickly but may or may not accept my work. Aside from that the larger companies would not give me as good a deal as the start-up. And yes, researching the people behind the start-up is something I have been doing.

How about making sure you don't give them exclusive rights to push your product?

I agree with this... be careful about what you sign. If they're paying a lot of money then maybe exclusive is OK, but it you're getting a smaller amount per sale then make sure your agreement with them is for non-exclusive use of your music. The contract you sign with them should specify this.
Best of luck,
