Hello Everyone,
I am doing a survey for an ethnomusicology paper about what effect digital music is having on live performers. If anyone would be willing to answer a few short questions on the matter, I would be very grateful. Thank you.

1.) What area of digital music are you in (music for tv, movies, radio, corporate, etc.)

2.) What sequencing and VSI software do you use?

3.) Professional or personal use? Why?

4.) How long does it take you to compose and master an average work? (about 3-5 minutes in length)

5.) How much do you charge for such a work? How? (by length of piece, number of work hours put it, set rate, etc.)

6.) How do you feel current digital instruments compare to live?

7.) Do you ever incorporate both live and digital? Why?

8.) Do you feel VS Instruments will ever replace a live performer? Why?

Thank you so much for your time

Best,
Brenton Costa

1.) What area of digital music are you in (music for tv, movies, radio, corporate, etc.)Computer games mainly, but any media will do! :D

2.) What sequencing and VSI software do you use?Cubase, EW stuff (WOW! Who would expect that?), Garritan stuff, Toontrack, Bela D. Media, Manytone

3.) Professional or personal use? Why?Professional. What do you mean why?

4.) How long does it take you to compose and master an average work? (about 3-5 minutes in length)Too general question. It's taken me about 3 weeks to compose a string quartet, and create the score, no mastering or rendering involved. And it's taken me a day to complete a lovely full epic 1 minute long track for full orchestra and choir, no score, but rendering and mastering.

5.) How much do you charge for such a work? How? (by length of piece, number of work hours put it, set rate, etc.)Too general question. All of the things you say.

6.) How do you feel current digital instruments compare to live?Assuming I don't have an orchestra locked up in my basement they compare brilliantly!

7.) Do you ever incorporate both live and digital? Why?Yes, for experimentation, because I can, because I have friends to do it, and well, because a live soprano is STILL better than VIs.

8.) Do you feel VS Instruments will ever replace a live performer? Why?It will match up the "quality", but not replace. Cars are "better" in terms of speed, etc, compared to bicycles, but bicycles are far from extinct. Different things, different fruit, different jobs to do.
