View Full Version : To slave or not to slave

I have a question about whether it is fundamentally better to run Play Gold on a separate slave computer versus keeping it all on a single host computer. Assuming that both machines are relatively fast and have lots of ram (up to 8 GB), would it really be that much more of an advantage moving the Gold resources to the slave computer?

I have just upgraded from Silver to Gold (have not received it yet!) and am trying to figure out if I really need to invest in a second computer.

Thanks!

It depends on you and how you work. If GOLD is the ONLY thing you use then of course simplify your life and keep it on one computer. If of course you have LOTS of stuff like Omnisphere, Symphobia, Other Orch libraries, etc its best to have more than one computer.

Just depends on how much you want to run beyond Gold, and for that matter how hard you push it.......If you are doing dense orchestrations that also include choir, you will need the slave. If you just do lighter orchestrations, you may well get by fine on the DAW alone.

Why not receive the new Gold, upgrade your computer to where you want, and try that first?

Allan and Paul,

Thanks for your responses. I guess when I asked the question I had tunnel vision and was only thinking in terms of Gold. Of course I'll be using other libraries. (doh!) The only thing I was concerned with was whether or not Gold would work well in my DAW or if I really need an additional computer.

I will wait until I get the software and try it out in the DAW before I determine my additional needs.

Thanks!

My current rig is an IBM Intellistation Z Pro server. I'm in the process of upgrading my RAM from 2.5 GB to 8 GB. The CPU is a 2.66 Mhz Intel Xeon processor. It's a dual core system. I can add an additional CPU when I can afford it. So for now I'll upgrade as I go.

As far as a second computer goes, I have no idea. I have been reading posts on this forum regarding various people's recommendations. I have to say I'm more confused than ever at this point. All I know is that I'll be looking at some sort of quad core system with 8 GB of RAM.
