I am new to EWQL. I recently purchased Goliath, MOR, Fab Four and VOP. I am looking for a good DAW to use these with. I have been playing around with Reason 4 and really like the rewire slave support, but can't figure out how to use my Play editions with it. Can this even be done?
I have also tried Reaper, but if I have to abandon Reason and Reaper for something else that is fine. I see a lot of posts on here from people who use Sonar and Cubase. I am not looking for a new DAW that comes with a 200 page Getting Started Manual. Any recommendations?
Thanks

Hi and welcome MediaTechGuy,
you won't be able to use PLAY from within Reason4. Reason is pretty much a closed application meaning you can't open 3rd party apps from within it. As far as Reaper is concerned i don't know that software...
As far as choosing a DAW is concerned, check out what people close to you use. Because you'll surely need help and also eventually, having the same software as some potential collaborators or clients is always a good idea.

Hm.. Are you sure it wont work with PLAY? Im using EWQLSO (The earlier Kompakt version) in Cubase and Reason 4 via Rewire. This works fine. Using a 32-bit system.
I´ve been in contact with Prophellerhead Reason asking them if Reason will work in a 64bit-system and they told me that it works fine though the Rewire-link wont work with a 64-bit DAW/sequencer, it has to be 32-bit.
@Mediatechguy: Concerning your choose of DAW it´s a matter of personal taste. I´ve tryed Sonar, Ableton Live, Reaper, FL studio and Cubase. For me Cubase was the choise because I thought it was easy to understand though it had many functions. It has a huge manual but you dont have to know so much to be able to create a song. So try them out and see what you think yourself.

Claude is absolutely right. Reason is a closed system .
MediaTechGuy please check EastWest's compatibility chart for the PLAY engine
to get some info which DAWs are able to host PLAY .
You'll find it under the menue "Tech Specs " :
http://www.soundsonline.com/EastWest-Quantum-Leap-Symphonic-Orchestra-PLAY-Editions-pr-EW-177.html
Maybe you should also read the "system requirements" for the PLAY engine ( ... now , after purchasing 4 PLAY libraries ... )

Everyone is sort of right here. Reason (I've only used versions 2 and 3, not 4) cannot communicate via the VST protocol with a synthesizer or sample player, only via its own proprietary protocol known as "Rewire." When the EastWest libraries could be used with Kontakt, it does register itself as a Rewire client and you could attach Reason to Kontakt and use the libraries in a Reason mix.
PLAY does not (currently) register itself as a Rewire client. And Reason does not support VST. Therefore, they cannot communicate. You could consider making that a feature request to EastWest, but I'd assume there are other features of higher priority already in the list.

Aha. I missunderstood his question, sort of. :)
No, you cant use the samples of PLAY in Reason. I thought he meant be able to use PLAY along with Reason, and in that case you have to go via a DAW/sequencer. As said, Reason does not support VST.

Although Reason can record midi data and you can get quite creative with it, it is not a true DAW. If you use another fully featured DAW like Cubase, Logic, or Digital Performer (to name a few), you can use all the instruments and features of Reason in those programs through Rewire, and in effect use Reason alongside your other VST instruments. You can get a simplified version of some of these programs if you don't need all the features (I know you can for Cubase, don't know the details about Logic and Digital Performer) for a cheaper price, and it will probably be easier to use. Good luck.

Logic does have an Express Version
