Hey guys, I hope you are all well. At present I am trying to figure out what college to go for as there seems to be very few to choose between. Coming from Ireland means that sound design isn't a real job so there is no need for it. So I really would appreciate if you guys could tell me if you by chance went to, are currently, or are also planning to go to a Sound Design college (fine arts etc.) and the location of that college would help me out alot. Thanks:)

Henry,

I'm also in Ireland. Native, from dublin, then went to NUIM.

Don't go to NUIM. The Temple Bar sound engineering program is far and away the best in the country.

All the best,

Rob.

Bournemouth University does an excellent masters in film sound. You specialize in either composition or sound design. You get loads of hands-on experience and a good understanding of film theory/history etc. There is some essay writing involved tho :(

Thanks for the replies guys. I checked out the sound training centre in Dublin http://www.soundtraining.com/coursedetail.php?id=2
For this year I plan to work my ass off and gain a fair amount of cash to finish off my setup so this part time course might be a good choice. Did you complete a course here Rob? (Rob's my name too :)) and if you did, could you tell me which programme you did and what I can expect from it?
After this year I plan to go abroad to start another course so I'd love to hear from more of the foreign guys too.
Thanks, Rob:)

post-sound and post-music for film are hard industries, so programs which have a high tuition are not always going to see huge returns. but the quality of education is sometimes better than a run-of-the-mill community college course.

my top advice is if you are thinking about it, get started immediately by reading up on what is involved. rip a movie clip off of youtube and redo the sound yourself from scratch, then do that ten more times and get better :)

Henry,

g'wan the name rob! But yes, i know a few guys who went there, and a few more who are still going there and they say it's amazing. I've talked to them at length and it seems to be, more than any other course i've heard of (and I've done a fair amount of investigation) the 'real deal'.

we should meet up for a drink, being irish and all :)
