6 French Horns articulations; rips x & shakes

Can anyone tell me what's supposed to be the difference between these articulations? rips x and shakes sounds identical to me....

If you listen closely, you'll be able to hear the difference. Rips are an upward gliss, and shakes are 3 quick notes a half step apart (low, high, low). Also, if memory serves, there are a couple types of rips (slow and fast).
