I have a quick question regarding the '6 French Horn' articulations in Gold. I have already completed a primer draft of the horn section for a new composition I am working on, and am not satisfied with any of the DFX articulations I am using right now to provide velocity swells.

The horns were originally composed with 6FH Sus 4 Layer, and that worked well for the rough draft, but now I wish to really color the piece up and need a more 'powerful' horn section. I am currently experimenting with a combination of 3 F Horns; Sus XFade, Sus DFX, and Sus DFX 2.

Here is the Question, which French Horn Articulation will provide the most power when utilizing the modulation wheel CC? Also, in the same vein, is it recommended to use Modulation as opposed to Expression when using DFX instruments?

Thanks for any ideas or opinions.

You might find that modulation and expression used together might give you the result you're after. When recording an instrument at a quiet dynamic, the gain structure is still optimized, so a quiet Horn articulation isn't going to be as quiet as it would be in real life. So if you use expression, too, you can get the quiet bits really quiet, and really get the contrast of the ff or fff dynamics.

That is, if I understood your question correctly... :p
