View Full Version : Kompakt: non-midi volume control?

Say I've loaded a multi instrument into Kompakt. Is it possible to separately control the initial volumes of the three mic positions OTHER than through midi? Doing it through midi would seem to require putting the three mic positions on separate midi channels and making three separate corresponding midi sequencer tracks. Assuming your sequencer track only has an initial volume (cc #7) event and no other cc#7 changes, it seems like it would be much simpler to disengage the three mic positions from midi volume control so that you could just set them at an initial value. Can this be done?

I probably could have stopped after the 2nd sentence, but I hope my question is clear. Thanks.

I'm not at home, so I can't attempt this to see whether it would work. But it's worth a try.

This will only work if you (a) want the relative loudness of the 3 mic positions to remain constant, or (b) are able to use automation to change the volume controls in Kompakt/Kontakt in real time.

Load all three articulation files into a single instance of Kompakt/Kontakt (maybe by loading one ot the predefined Multis). Assign all three "instruments" to the same MIDI channel. Adjust the volume control (at the right of the Kompakt interface) for each "instrument" to taste.

I've never tried that, but it might work.

"Load all three articulation files into a single instance of Kompakt/Kontakt (maybe by loading one ot the predefined Multis). Assign all three "instruments" to the same MIDI channel. Adjust the volume control (at the right of the Kompakt interface) for each "instrument" to taste."

That's exactly what I've tried. But as soon as the sequence begins playing, the volume knobs jump to their maximum position, even if the midi track contains NO volume (cc #7) information. However, I use Digital Performer and I found that if I turn "Event Chasing" off (or disable cc#7 in Event Chasing), then the volume knobs in Kompakt WILL stay where I put them. This isn't the best solution because any changes to Event Chasing will effect all midi tracks in the sequence. The only way to make it work is to separately record this particular pre-balanced instrument on its own audio track, and then turn Event Chasing back on if needed.

It would be very useful to have a "disable midi volume control" option in Kompakt.

remmet,

I use DP too, and have had to hobble along with the same fix--disabling cc7 Event Chasing. I've found it to be pretty satisfactory to then use cc11 for relative volume control. I just set the Kompakt multi volumes "robustly" and then use expression. I have also found that the best, most realistic dynamics are with DXF and MOD patches.

Glad to discover another DP user! :)
