Hello,

This just occured to me and I am interested to see how others are handling this:

When writing chords for sections, (for instance 4 trombones), what are folks doing? In other words:

Does writing a 3 note chord and using the 4 bone section result in a 12 bone section?

Or is it better to use 3 or 4 solo bone samples on seperate tracks for chords and switch to the 4 bone samples when writing unisons?

If going the multiple solo route, how do you deal with phasing issues if using the same instrument for the different notes of the chord?

I hope this is clear

Thanks,

John Mazzei

Played with this last night -- and it depends on how much of a purist you want to be.

For instance, chording inside the 4 set does not seem to add up to a 12 bone -- because of the lack of the coloration that would occur between 12 players -- not just 4 samples with the same dynamic. In my tests it seemed to add up to controllng the dynamic of the attack velocity of each part of the chord -- which is easy for good musicians with years of keyboard work. Not falling into that league - I think some editing of the midi dynamics is going to be needed for me if I use that technique.

Of course, you could also score 4 single lines and vary the sample slightly - or use 4 different bone samples. This is the classic approach used in Garritan Personal -- but it can be time consuming.

But either way is a lot less hassle than finding four good trombonists.

Try this. If you need 4 notes of a trumpet or Tbone then use the solo instruments.

If you need a FAT chord with only 3 or 4 notes then use the 4TBones and 4 Trumpets. I use 2 notes each and get a fat brass chord.

Try 2 Ensemble notes, and a solo to complete the chord.
