Harry Gregson Williams is one of my favorites as well. His "Man on Fire" soundtrack is fantastic. Kingdom of Heaven should have been titled KingDUMB of Heaven. How is it that Ridley Scott could make such a terrible film? Gladiator was brilliant. All of the rest of the "sandal movies" should never have been made. (Alexander, etc.)

I really don't understand Ridley Scott, how can a director that was responsible for such classics as "Alien" and "Blade Runner" in the 80's make such bad movies in the 90's. I hated gladiator, but black hawk down really set a new standard in insulting the audience.
I haven't seen Kingdom of Heaven but aparently by what the general public says it's another insulting movie.

Sorry for the OT, thanks for the pics neil ! HG-Williams is a great composer his KoH score was really good.

Don't know if it's "cool" to say this... but I thought the Sinbad soundtrack was pretty good too. I'm also excited that Hugh Marsh will be playing on it as well... being a fan of LMcK.

The Sinbad Soundtrack is definetly one of Gegson-Williams best. Cartoon-Scores ARE cool (Lots of Music!!)

Why do you feel that way about Gladiator and BHD?

I don't remember the music in Alien, must've been very atmospheric or just plain forgettable. Blade Runner's music is awful to me. I think it's because the music is locked to the timeperiod when the film was made.

Same here. I love Zimmer's Gladiator score. It's as close to perfect as a score can be. I don't listen to it much, because I don't want to ruin my enjoyment of it! :D

I love the score to Gladiator as well. I know a lot of non-musicians that love it too, so it seems to appeal on a broad level. When a movie is really bad it's hard for me to even think about whether the score is to my liking or not. It seems like the whole crew goes down with the ship. In other words, a great score cannot save a bad film, but it seems a mediocre score will not bring down a great film.

OT Check out the score to the movie "Birth". It's really beautiful.

Have you listened to the score yet? I have quite mixed feelings about this score. Sadly enough, I wasn't too impressed. Track 12: The Battle is quite awesome battle music. and it has some nice themes here and there, but otherwise, on the whole, I think it's a bit too "conventional" I would have liked the Narnia music to be of huge epic proportions with fantastic themes and glorious fanfares. Instead, we get a quite common Media Ventures score which will probably work in the film, but it fails to paint the images and landscapes of the fantastic world in my mind as I listen to it.

I figure I'll hold off my own personal judgement until a) I hear the soundtrack cd in full; b) I see the movie. It is after all intended to go along with the visuals, right? :)

Thanks for all of the links, Neil. esp the videotape from Steinberg Users.

Also, there's a Gregson-Williams interview in the December'05 issue of Sound on Sound mag (USA/International copy) – or via online subscription through SOS (http://www.soundonsound.com/) home page (note: yellow box w/ feature flash articles ....People).

The interview details his studio, which is lovely (a glimpse on Cubase .mov) plus highlights of his equipment at Wavecrest: samplers, hardware synths, gear for recording, mixing, software synths and plug-ins. He shares his creative process.

Opening Dec 9th. I *think this is the official website: Chronicles of Narnia (http://adisney.go.com/disneypictures/narnia/index.html). Pretty neat trailer(s) ...epic, triumphant, spectacular landscapes, characters and creatures. There's a 2-disc special edition of the soundtrack.

Every time I see that sweet face of his, I know it's all about the music. Like he doesn't have a choice - the Dharma is dancing him. That love-is-the-fire and I-am-wood thang. He came in with a whopper of an assignment engraved upon his heart, that's for sure. True, for us all.

After reading the interview, I am curious about that little film, The Magic of Marciano.

Any ideas where one might be able to find a newstand copy of SOS? I've tried B&N and Borders with no luck.

peru

I've seen the USA/International edition at Guitar Center, but not a newstand - maybe in the larger cities / progressive bookstores. There must be a way to purchase individual (physical) issues. Online subscription gives one access to the most current articles, reviews.

Update: http://www.soundonsound.com/shop - you can purchase individual copies via that page. $9.95 per. (Select Country + note links in left frame)

Ho, and another update, folks - due to SOS' holiday jingle jangle, that Harry G-W interview has been archived. So here's the path: http://www.soundonsound.com/ -> Articles -> People -> Artists/Engineers/Producers/Programmers -> Harry Gregson-Williams (most current dates accessed via login/password)

The interviews go back to 1985 (although most of the "oldies" are not on site) 1985? 20 years old - Happy B-Day SOS.

Thanks for the info, Peru. I'll try Guitar Center maybe tomorrow or later this week then.

Went to see the film yesterday. Pretty well done film. Well, I like these sorts of films anyway and am familiar with the books and with the Inklings, etc. Also, it was my first experience seeing a digital projection. Pretty cool stuff. I think the music served the film really well.

When you get the soundtrack, you guys should keep an eye out for the deluxe version, which comes with a dvd. The dvd features about a twelve minute interview with H G-W filmed at the Todd AO studio.

:D :D :D

Had to bump this thread cause im tempted to buy the deluxe version. Does anybody have it? How is the Gregson-Williams interview? Got my December SOS and damn his studio is beautiful.

Sequent

For a few dollars more than the regular version, I thought it was worth getting the deluxe. The interview is about 12 mins long, I believe. Taking place in the studio where the orchestra was recorded. I thought it was worth seeing. Nothing mindblowing, but it was nice to hear him talk about it.

It's also nice to get some of the other short making of films that I suspect might be expanded for the dvd release.

I couldn't find the December SOS. Is that the one that mentions the Access T1 on the cover? The only one I've found is the November issue. I didn't want to take a chance buying it because I didn't see mention on the cover of the interview. And someone here had said December. The bar code on the issue I saw said "11".

G.C. around here didn't have it at all btw.

Any thoughts? I'd sure like to read that interview, but am not really keen on subscribing at the moment.

Yeah the December issue has the T1 on the cover. I liked reading about HGW's composition process. I don't know if you live in a city or not but if you do there should be some magazine stores around which probably have it. Got mine from a magazine store.

Legend, the Director's Cut, probably has my favorite Ridley Scott movie score. It was done by Jerry Goldsmith, who happens to have done some great music.

Thanks for the pics, I always love looking at behind the scenes pics and movies. I love Gregson-Williams too, but my favorite score of his for me was the sountrack to Metal Gear Soild 3: Snake Eater (Yea...i'm a video game fanatic). I've never been sucked into a game from it's soundtrack like that before. Music toally put me in the zone. If only I could one day be half as good...:)

Hello everyone,
ive got to say that i found HGW score for kingdom of heaven sufferred from style over substace. Plenty of banging drums, haunting winds and the typical ahh-ohhh from the choir but nothing of any real substance upon closer listening. sorry :)

This is the kind of score that "grows on you", after I saw the film I've been listening to it almost every day at work and am loving every minute of it now. I found this is the case with many MV scores these days, I like them a whole lot better after a while (and after seeing the movie). It was the same with Batman Begins.

But first impressions are of course very important :D New MV scores often lack the big first impression hit.
