Well, RA is unbelievable!!!

I've been messing with it for a couple of weeks, and its blowing my
mind.
Its also really inspired me greatly.

Check out this piece i wrote. Its pure RA , except for guitar
track i added using my flamenco guitar.(nylon string)
And some chimes from Gold.
The harmonic approach is derivative of flamenco, but i use
RA to soak it in that middle eastern/Indian/african flavor.
Man is RA awesome!

Instruments used were;
Bansuri
Tablas
Tambura
Djembe ensemble
Mandolin
Gong
Oud
Taiko ensemble
Baritone Violin
Middle Eastern string section
Duduk
I played the guitar...

Like I said over at NSS: awesome work.

How did you go about micing your guitar?

What a poor piece of music, the quitar sounds quite bad...

Nope, I am kidding! This is awesome! You guitar performance is great. Percussions are well done, and varied and make it very sharp.

You've done a very good job! Like Neotypic I'd be curious to know what is your recording gear for the guitar.

Thanx for posting.

Thanks guys!

I record my guitar through 2 Shure SM-81's in XY config, into an
Aphex model 1100 Thermionics preamp, and into an RME card.

Close micing, then using Waves IR.

The mics are about 6 or 8 inches away, as high as the soundhole.
They sit between the 12 fret and the soundhole. They were recorded in 16 bit.

The room i record in is acoustically dead, wich i do on purpose, so i dont
get any nasty small room sound in the tracks.

So glad you guys liked it! :D

Ok, I caught all that except the XY config. What does that entail?

Sorry, I'm recording dumb. I just bought a Shure SM58 to try to put down some vocal tracks and not having much luck at getting "clean" sounding shtuff. Then again I'm dumb when it comes to mixing as well. ;)

Half the fun is in learning anyhow. Heheh.

But the guitar sounds really nice and sits so darn well in the mix it makes me insanely jealous! :D

[Edit] Oh look, post 100. *laughs* I don't post here often or anything. :p

Nice piece toddk, very "alive". I like the colors of it a lot. I'm just waking up and it makes me go back in some strange but nice dream. Sounds good... I should get a copy of RA sometime and I can't wait.
Great job again ! Cause it's not about a library, but about man's skills and abilities....
Best,

Amaury

Ha ha, well, dont feel so bad, cause i've been playing and recording guitar
for 10 plus years. It takes time, wich i'm sure you know.:)
The preamp im using is pretty outstanding too. Cost me an arm and a leg.
Its also a handmade guitar. :)

The SM58 is a good stage mic, but it wont give you what you want in the studio.

Look into a Rode NT 1 condensor mic.
That was the first condensor i had ever bought. Bought it when they first came out
in the mid 90's.
Also keep in mind, the Preamp you run the mic into is very important.
The preamp on a little Mackie mixer, wont sound nearly as good as a standalone
rack unit, with discrete class A wiring.
Im not saying spend 2800.00 like i did, but get something decent. It really does make
a difference.
Oh yeah, if you type XY micing diagram into Google, you'll see what it looks
like. The mics form an X.

Thanks for the good words regarding my piece! I put alot of sweat and tears into it.

Nice.

Thanks for the advice bud, I appreciate it. I'm running it through an ozonic which I've been having trouble with anyhow.

I'm looking to buy a new PCI card with some XLRs on it. Any suggestions in the 200-500 range? I've been looking at M-Audio's stuff.

In the next two months I'm trying to upgrade my "studio" so I can concentrate more on music and less on getting crap to work right. :p

M-Audio is a great way to go actually.

I ran a Delta 1010 for a very long time, and the RME really doesnt sound
much better as far as conversion/headroom..

Im not sure what you'll find with XLR's, but you can surely find something
by M-audio that's in your range, that sounds up to par.

A decent condensor like the NT-1, a solid stand alone preamp, and
a good card should get you very close to what you're looking to hear.:)

I've heard great things about the Maudio Firewire 410.

BTW that NT-1 sounds great for Vocals as well as guitars, and other instruments.
Its extremely cheap, but sounds awesome, with very low self noise.
Big bang for the buck. :D

Todd, your guitar playing is incredible. I'm a guitar player (or thought I was). Now, even though I've been playing for 20-30 years, I wish I would have learned how to play.

What is your background? (Like how old are you?) And what kind of musical experiences have you had?

Are you working? Studio gigs?

Nice to hear a demo with RA - look forward to hearing lots more if they're all this good. I might even think about buying RA myself!
