How important would you say it is to have a manager as a up coming film composer with a few smaller scoring jobs each year? Would you consider the friendship and contacts with directors and producers much more valuable than having a producer running your errands?

You can see some of my other posts. You HAVE to have an agent. They probably won't help you very much but it gives you legitimacy. I know it sucks to give away your money to someone who didn't have anything to do with getting you a job, but look at it like hiring a lawyer. You wouldn't go to trail without a lawyer just because it costs you money. An Agent also will help with your deal, help if and when things go bad, etc. It is an absolute must to have an Agent - as soon as possible.
