Hey David! Amazing to have you here, thank you so much for taking the time.

I'm an aspiring filmmaker, and only a hobbyist composer, so my question is from a slightly different point of view: what do you expect from a director? Or put differently, what would an ideal director to work with be like?

I've scored my own short films so far, but I'm trying to get out of that routine. Obviously I'd like to get the best out of my composer when I find one, so it would be great to hear what kind of qualities and approaches from a director you think can really help a composer do his best work on a movie.

You can see some of the other posts. I like to talk, structure, character, script, in short, I want to talk a "filmmaker" language. It's impossible to really talk about music, except in the most basic "non music" way. (louder, softer, darker, lighter, etc...) While this can be helpful (louder, darker, etc.) it doesn't really get to the core issue. How can music help the film tell the story. The first place to start is, what is the story really about. Not just on the surface but in it's depths, which is where music can help clarify. Hope that makes sense. Talk drama, film, before you talk music.
