Hi David & Marty,

I am a 30 year old married male and have always had a dream to compose music for video games or movies.

I have no formal training in music but create by ear. I use MIDI so have gained creative skills over the years with this package.

I live in one of the most isolated cities in the world, Perth, Western Australia.

Which of the following would you suggest if I wanted to take this more seriously & make a profession out of creating music?

Move to LA, study and gain US recognised qualifications, make contacts & look for opportunities;
a) Where would I start to make contacts?

b) Could I expect many opportunities in this business in the current economic climate?

Stay where I am, get recognised Aus qualifications and then move to where ever the best chance of finding work would be.
a) Where in the world are the best opportunities at this present time?

b) Would Australian qualifications be recognised globally?

Don’t worry about music theory and qualifications, keep to my self taught creative skills,
a) Are things tough out there at the moment and I would be wasting my time & money to pursue professional qualifications?

I appreciate any help you can offer & eagerly look forward to your response.

Kind Regards

Nash

You ask some tough questions. You are married, moving to Los Angeles cold would not be a good idea. I would do a grassroots thing in Australia. Do you know any film makers? Student films? Commercials? Do them for free, get some material out there, develop your skills.
Maybe the film you did gets some traction, at that point you could use that as your calling card and parlay that into another film. A paying film.
You aren't so isolated, we have the internet.
