Anyone picking up Episode 2 of Classic Goldie tonight on UK's BBC 2 (or later on Youtube no doubt, for those out of reach). He's the well known street artist, film star and Hip Hop DJ who came second in the conducting competition Maestro last year, He's been commissioned to write a 10 minute piece for chorus and full orchestra at the BBC's Promenade Concerts. From Episode 1 he seems to be a genuine if very conflicted musical artist, unlike the vapid Paul Morley mentioned in threads below. With absolutely no technical facility, it'll be fascinating to see what he comes up with - apparently technology comes to his rescue in the end (Eastwest samples, perhaps?)

I'm going to watch it tonight on iPlayer, shortly after it's broadcast. I enjoyed the first episode, though as I suspected, they glossed over the nuts and bolts of writing for an orchestra. Which nameless person will be saddled with the task of orchestrating and preparing the score and parts of 'Goldie's' piece?
(slightly irrelevant) I noticed that they used the Mackerras (G46) room at Trinity College of Music again, like they did in Maestro - I had conducting and orchestration classes in there during my studentship - funny to see 'celebrities' in there. :)

I saw this last week and I'm looking forward to tonights episode. He seems like a really nice guy with a passion for music of all styles. I found it really interesting how he had the ideas in his head and wrote them down as that graphical timeline/chart as he couldn't write notation.

The documentary itself was interesting. Didn't really like the piece. There wasn't really much to it. It was mostly driven by its texture rather than its melodic essence. (if that makes any sense).
But it was cool (and slightly funny) to see how they simplify the 'technology' (e.g. Sibelius and MIDI) for the mainstream audience.
