Harmony in scores and taking chances

Hi John.

Very big fan here. What I find really compelling about your work is how you're able to still find fresh harmonizations for your themes. Question: how are you able to satisfy the director/producers and still take musical risks and chances? It seems like a very delicate balance. Go one way and you settle into the norm. Go the other way and risk alienating the client and/or audience.

Very hard question to answer as I feel I would be making a judgement call on the success or failure of my own ability to walk the line that you are referring to. I would just say - keep thinking "is this the best thing I can do?" until you run out of time, then stop.
