How do I go about creating a track envelope for the mod wheel values of Mod/X-fade articulations from Symphonic Orchestra? My sequencer is Cakewalk Home Studio 2004, which I think is a stripped down version of Sonar. When I want to create a track envelope for a MIDI track it gives me the following pre-named options: Automated Mute, Chorus, Pan, Reverb and Volume. The final option in that sub-menu just says "MIDI...", which leads to another menu entitled "MIDI Envelope". Here I'm given three drop-down menus with the following options: Type, Value and Channel. The options under Type are: Wheel, ChanAft, Control, RPN and NRPN (no idea what any of this means). If Control is highlighted from those options then the Value drop-down lists consecutive options from CC: 0 to CC: 127. Channel gives options from 1 to 16.

So, can I set up a mod wheel/X-fade envelope from here? I've heard people mention these CC values, but don't know what they are really. The only envelope type I've really used in the past is the pre-titled Volume on audio tracks.

The manual that came with Cakewalk doesn't seem to cover this stuff, so any help would be appreciated.

I use Sonar, so I'm familiar with the UI you describe. In the context menu, choose MIDI... and then value CC 1. One is the Mod Wheel's control number.

CC 11 is Expression's control number.

And Type = Wheel is the Pitchbend Wheel.

Those are the only three envelopes I ever use in track view.

You can ignore Channel.

Thanks for the help. I've given it a quick test, and it all works as you say. I've just noticed that the latest version of Home Studio on the Cakewalk site is titled Sonar Home Studio, so they really must be similar.

I started with Cakewalk Home Studio when Sonar was at version 3, and I was told that Home Studio was basically Sonar version 2 with a few esoteric items removed.

Now that Sonar is up to version 5, I'd bet that Home Studio is a trimmed down version of either Sonar 3 or 4, though I don't know for sure.
