NEW HOLLYWOOD STRINGS REVIEW QUOTES -

From the violins down to the basses, these string sections have a lovely sound, texture and feel, with a rich, full symphonic sound and an opulent quality that comes from combining great players with a great sound engineer. There’s no doubt that the fabulous sound, musical versatility and depth of expression of HS place it in the highest echelon of professional string libraries. If you’re serious about orchestral sampling, you won’t want to let this impressive strings library pass you by.

- Sound On Sound (see the full review in the October issue of Sound On Sound)

Onto the sound, and, unsurprisingly, it’s excellent. Importantly, it’s very consistent, but there are also real subtleties worth mentioning. For legato patches, velocity affects transition speed rather than volume, so playing harder means a quicker transition. Next, some legato patches combine articulations and use a tempo-detection script to switch between them. All told, Hollywood Strings is an incredibly impressive but demanding instrument, both in terms of system resources and your own mental faculties. However, if you produce soundtrack music professionally and/or seriously, you’ll be*used to that. This is highly recommended. 9/10 Performance Award recipient.

- Computer Music (see the full review in the October issue of Computer Music)

Expertly recorded and programmed. Extremely flexible and musical. Impressive range of articulations and playing styles. Appropriately, the producers recorded in a legendary Hollywood facility: EastWest’s own Studio 1, formerly Cello Studios, where decades of hits were recorded. Shawn Murphy did the sampling sessions—his film score engineering credits read like a list of blockbusters from the past 15 years. So yes, the sound quality is superb. Hollywood Strings is a no-holds-barred sample library that can indeed faithfully reproduce the “film score” string sound. Ultimately, this is one of the most musical, playable orchestral string libraries to date, and though it pushes the limits of current computing power, that’s a small price to pay.

- Keyboard USA (see the full review in the November issue of Keyboard)

Okay, so everyone knows that the quality of orchestral samples continues to get better and better. As the hardware and software get more robust, the producers of these libraries take full advantage of it all, creating sounds that are sonically richer; and ones that use more microphones in more positions, have more dynamic range and articulations, and are generally better than ever before. What was impossible even a year or two before quickly becomes the standard in composers’ studios here in L.A. and around the world. Such is the case with the EastWest/Quantum Leap Hollywood Strings Diamond Edition. This thing is a monster, and it has quickly set a new bar in what you can get out of a library of orchestral string samples.
