I want to know just how the heck Shnurgle was able to "Weckl out" on a keyboard controller! I can accept every other part of that demo, because he's a knock-out piano player (and celesta!). But he said he's not a drummer. Neither am I.
Explain yourself, shnurg!

Shnurg obviously has a great overall musical knowledge.
He has great rhythm, evident in his piano playing. He obviously
understands beat division enormously well.
I could see him tapping drum parts like that out, and then doing
some cleaning up/editing.
Of course, you have to understand drumming. Shnurg understands how
a fusion drummer thinks. Thats the main tool in getting drum sequences
like the one in Loopless.
My opinion anyway. Sorry to step in there. Im a big shnurg fan.:D
Here's something i did years ago with DKFH 1, EVP88, and Trilogy.
Trying my hand at midi fusion. the guitar is real.
Drums were done exclusively in the editor, no controller.
There are obvious repeats in this clip, but i thought it was decent.
The rhodes part is super stiff. Yuk! sorry:p

Todd, thanks for the kind words, I'll check out your groovin tonight.
Estebween, as you may have noticed by the lack of melodic development in my piano solo, I'm more rhythmically inclined than anything else. I may never have picked up a drum stick, but I've spent many hours listening to drummers analytically and transcribing grooves. I roomed with a drummer in college with great taste and he hipped me to Steely Dan and their school of great studio drummers like Steve "Creamy Deuce" Gadd and Jeff "Can't Make My Alimony Payments on Time" Porcaro. He also showed me a thing or two about where emphasis needs to lie in a groove and what you can get away with and still make it groove.
Anyway, when I laid down the 1st pass of the drum track in Loopless I marked the meter changes with the ride cymbal, and nailed the hits of the arrangement with the crashes and kick. I also put in some of the back beat snare stuff on that pass alternating vetween center strokes and rim shots. Then on pass 2 I got more interesting with the kick, snare, hats, and toms. It took several passes before I had the notes in place, then I went back and adjusted some of the velocities to make it "flow" better.
It took me two 10-hour sessions to nail this jernt, so it's not like I just rocked out with my index fingers on the Kurzweil and pulled a Steve Gadd one-take wonder or anything. It was more like a long and labored Ringo "Spaghetti Stain" Starr 12-take special.

Shnurgle, it's really a GREAT work! Your drum programing is very very good! :) I'm your fan also :D Do you play everything on a keyboard? I prefer using the mouse.
I like to do some drum programing as well. I think this is the first time writing something at this forum. I've purchased Gold, RA, Stormdrum and Ultimate Piano Pack in Dec, but i hadn't time to do nothing with these outstanding libraries :) working so much...:o
As soon as i can i will write something to the contest!
I have wrote some demos to BFD, if someone want listen to it...

Jaques, excellent top-shelf sample programming here. Is this LPC guitars? Sounds great. Really nice stuff. Very impressive. Shred-fest!

Hey Shnurgle! Thank you for listening it! I'm glad to be here at Soundsonline forum!
All the instruments i have played myself, except the drums, wich are programed. I've started my life playing, either acoustic guitar -classical music- or eletric guitar - rock, jazz, funk and bass. Ironically i work like an engineer for a living...:p Many of the bands and artists i work with doesn't know i'm able to play. That is because in Brasil is almost impossible to get "score" projects, or something like that and believe me i've tried change it, but with no sucess. But you know, i need to eat, hehe, so let's engineer. No problem, Internet is my salvation, i'm moving myself towards score projects...
Thanks for the kind words!
Great work again shnurgle! Hats off!

Great chops, man! You should be touring with a rock band!
Seriously, have you ever given any thought to going to LA and doing studio work as a player? I've got a guitarist friend out there doing session work for records and film scores and he loves it.

Hey JacquesMathias,
Im listening to "Lightness" now and this is really great stuff, from the programming on the drums to the playing and writing. It reminds me alot of Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, great stuff!
