Hello All,
I just got SC and am drooling over it.... got most everything working, except I'm having a hard time with the mod wheel and I'm sure I either don't understand or am using it wrong.
I typed in a simple phrase in VOTOK "geT yor Sordz Kum Fal-oO mEE"
Sounds fine until I start using the mod wheel. I don't have a mod wheel on my keyboard so I'm using the wheel in the Kompakt player as I play. But it doesn't sound right. The wheel keeps jumping back to a position about 20% from the bottom at each note off. Also it doesn't seem to do anything for some of the notes, like geT and Kum. I thought I could start off with the mod wheel low at the beginning of the phrase, raise it up slowly on the way to Kum and then drop it back to about halfway on FaloO. Am I not using it right?
Thanks!
edit: Guess it would help to include the multi I'm using: F ALTO WB DYN MOD N ... oh and this is all Standalone (not in a sequencer)

Make sure that you have the latest updates for the kompakt player and the Wordbuilder application. These updates fixed the mod wheel problem for me. Hope this helps.

I already have installed the SC 1.09 patch and WB 1.1.2
Is the another one I need?

Ok... so that's not normal. I'll send an email to tech support :)

Hello,
All the consonants and vowels are spread over 5 Kompakt instruments on five channels. When you move the mod wheel on your keyboard, WordBuilder copies the data to each of the five loaded instruments in the multi.
When you move the mod wheel on the Kompakt interface, you're only changing it for the highlighted instrument. This means that only one of the five vowel/consonant sets is actually changing.

Ah! That makes sense. Anyway setting in the Kompakt player to make the mod wheel apply to all of them ( I'm guessing not right now ).
What about the mod wheel jumping back to it's original position each time you release?
Any work arounds?
Thanks for the info!

Hello again,
Not as sure as I was about Kompakt's Mod wheel...but WordBuilder seems to store the last mod wheel value in a buffer (have to check with Nuno to confirm). As soon as a word is played, it sends that info to Kompakt. Since you don't have a mod wheel control on your keyboard, the last value received by WordBuilder is always the default, so it always sends the default value to Choirs, thus resetting the graphic mod wheel on Kompakt.
Want to know a neat trick? If you look at the volume envelope for any letter, you'll see a plus box in the lower right corner. Another crossfade will appear (CC0). Click on the button above it, and select Modulation depth. Yes, you can even automate Mod Wheel data in WordBuilder! Since the last value is saved, WordBuilder will continue playing at this level until you change it somehwere in another letter. Handy if you don't have a mod wheel!

Thanks Sam! That's some great info.
*Shudder* :( Drawing in all those mod wheel curves by hand is going to be a pain. But at least it's a viable workaround for the momment. I really hope the player cna be changed so the mod wheel value is used if the mouse click is down.
Of course... what I REALLY need to do is buy a new midi keyboard. The one I have is .... ehem... well it leaves much to be desired :)
Thanks again for the help

If you're using a sequencer, you can always draw them in there, too. The real issue is if you don't have a mod wheel, you have to fake it, and automation is the only real way to do it.
