Just re-listened to this score and I'm floored by it. The opening track is as powerful as anything Shore wrote for Lord of the Rings (and this was composed a year prior to that trilogy). Think Carmina Burana on steroids. Obviously the subject of this film allowed Goldenthal to really go crazy with purely aggressive music. But there's also some beautiful boy falsetto laments, boogie-woogie jazz big band cues, a Copelandesque Lincoln Portrait styled adagietto, and some great vintage Goldenthal licks. there's even an aleatoric choral track that inspires the sound of Ligeti's seminal works from the '60s.
This is definitely one of my more pleasant re-discoveries. Although it's not quite up to COBB's level of writing for me, it's easily the best thing Goldenthal has written in the past 5 years (even though it was written in 2000). I like parts of Final Fantasy but don't feel it's as cohesive a listening experience away from the film as Titus. Highly recommended.
