I just picked this up.......and I have to say ever since I heard it I cannot go a single day without playing that main theme. Whenever I miss it I feel sedated for the entire day. Seriously. It is just such wonderful music - I cannot understand why Newman doesn't have more recognition or awards, I cannot think of any other composer who has affected me as much as he has.
A sample from the Angels in America main theme:

Very true! Newman is definitely one of the most unrecognized great composers out there. He's written so many amazing scores. Finding Nemo, American Beauty, Shawshank...the list goes on and on!

Yea I certainly agree about the quality of his work.....I'm not sure however any of the Newman's have ever gone unrecognized!

True, maybe "underrecognized" is a better word (if it is a word). :D

Even if it's not a word I know what you mean and I agree whole heartedly..... his work is widely underrecognized

If you guys liked his angel of america score, you should check out two movies he did that just out do angel of america...
Meet black joe (track 8)
Road to predition (the main theme)
I'm a huge fan of thomas Newman's work. it's very simple yet complex when you get into it.

think he is a great composer
his music for shawshank redemption and american beauty are masterpiece
expecially american beauty was really extremely original and effective and so much abused from other composers ..
even pop ones :(
loved his Finding Nemo, for sure the best music for an animated movie so far

The "Road to perdition" main theme is the greatest movie theme I've ever heard by now.
Everytime I listen to it I get touched.

Finding Nemo was made by Randy... But agree, Thoams Newman is a great composer, and the score for Shawshank Redemption is a marvel. Some credits for Mozart too, the "opera" scene is quite powerful.

Havenīt heard a lot of Newmans music although I intend to change that, what I have heard was impressive although not all of his music is unforgettable, however Iīve only heard a half dozen scores up until now, so I must investigate further I guess. Any further recommendations ?

Right, mea culpa. Randy did the other Disney stuff, Toy Stories, Monsters Inc., Bug's Life...
Just out of curiousity, are they relatives?:o

Yep, they are all part of the Newman dynasty, Alfred, Thomas, David, Randy, etc, etc.
An amusing tidbit from a review:
The director of Finding Nemo, Andrew Stanton, decided he wanted a change of direction from that adopted by Newman's cousin Randy in the previous Disney/Pixar films. In typically laconic style, Randy remarked that "they finally decide they don't want so many notes and they get my *&%$ing cousin to do it?"
