What does everyone think about this guy's music? I'm partial to his CONTACT score as well as PREDATOR. CAST AWAY was also a pretty beautiful offering even though it didn't have much music (more than Brokeback Mountain though! :p ). I like his rhythmic sensibilities and full bodied orchestrations, as heard in JUDGE DREDD or THE MUMMY RETURNS.

Any other fans of his?

No doubt, he is one of the best film composers around today. I'm less enthused about his action-adventure stuff, but he really shines in movies like Forrest Gump, Cast Away and Polar Express. Beautiful melodies and orchestration that support, and not overwhelm, the picture.

Mark Isham is another one of my favorites. His music for '8 Below' was just terrific. These two really know how write for film.

right on. Silvestri never ceases to impress the pants off me. Back to the future is one of my favorites. He's got huge ears, evidenced by the way he moves harmony around effortlessly, but he also has this wonderful sensability for writing themes that are fun and memorable. I think he was born to score films.

Silvestri is great but there's something about his style that doesn't interest me as much as other composers...feels like something is missing. I think my favourite of his is Mummy Returns. Polar express is nice because the film was obviously temped with Edward Scissorhands. :) Forrest Gump is ok but it's kinda blahhh. It's sweet like ice cream but ice cream that has fallen on the ground and has ants in it.

He's really good and underrated.

Predator is a really great score. The Mummy Returns is a great score. He has great rhythm and timing.

I 'm a big fan of Silvestri. Van Helsing and The Mummy Returns are great soundtracks. Suprisingly similar though... And don't forget The Abyss. That's another great one. :)

Another great score of his is "What Lies Beneath" with Harrison Ford and Michelle Phifer; it's a great thiller!

Van Helsing - I forgot that one. That's works really well. What Lies Beneath is a Herrmann ripoff. Probably due to the temp track and the fact that the director went into Hitchcock mode for that film.

Im really fond of Silvestri's music. I went to a concert at UCLA that featured Silvestri conducting his "Forrest Gump Suite" with clips from the film being played in the background and it affected me very deeply. I also really like his Back to the Future, Cast Away, and Van Helsing soundtracks.

On a similar note, for those of you who have heard "Final Battle" by Silvestri (in Van Helsing) doesn't it sound very similar to Nick Phoenix's "The Summoning?" I was listening to the demos on this site one day and thought that I had heard Nick's "The Summoning" somewhere else. After a while thinking about it, I remembered that motif from Van Helsing.

*This is just an observation- I'm not trying to say anything negative about Nick's work.:D

I saw the Polar Express, and I thought his music made the show magical. That was a good solid score for him. :)

Back to the Future was one of the scores that led me to film music. I love the theme; I love the euphoric purpose-driven magic of it. Forrest Gump and Cast Away are also uplifting.

As for the rest of Alan Silvestri's work, it’s hard to find tracks as magnificent as the previous mentioned. Tomb Raider’s score has some nice melodic cues but the theme is lacking. I think most of his other work is just that: work. And work gets the job done but it seems to me the magic is missing.

No one mentioned the theme to "CHIP'S". One thing about Silvestri that I like is that his music has alot of variety.

Another vote for "Mummy Returns".

It's time to think about the Mummy score from Jerry Goldsmith as well - it's awesome. Sometimes Mr. Goldsmith pushed the orchestra to play heavy metal. :D

Mummy Returns is way better than The Mummy. :)
