I just saw Fantasia 2000 a couple of nights ago and really liked "Pines of Rome" by Respighi. Does anyone have a favorite recording or conductor I should look for?

Thanks,
Stefan

Hi Stefan,

It was many years ago and maybe I'm wrong, I've heard at a friend of mine home a great vinyl record of Respighi's "I Pini di Roma" directed by the great, happy, funny and unforgettable Arturo Toscanini.
The recording was old and not high quality but the performance was absolutely great. But maybe my memory could fail because it happened many years ago when I was a very young music student.
But if that recording really exists and is not a dream of mine, you should look for it (maybe it was remastered on a CD).

Cheers

PS: just a brief search on Altavista and I've found this page:

at the bottom of the page there are bibliography/discography and some links.

I´m not your favourite conductor but I have conducted this "not so well known" piece on a few occasions and I just wanted to say that it is magnificent, I wish you luck finding what you´re looking for. Chris :D

I like the early digital recording by Charles Dutoit and the Orchestre symphonique de Montreal, it also has Respighi's companions to Pini di Roma Feste Romane and Fontane di Roma both great orchestral workouts .
