James newton-howard is my favorite film composer. His work on the shamaylan (sp) movies is brilliant, especially Signs! the soundtrack to Dying Young is also quite good.

I think his best score is Dinosaur.

I still like Unbreakable and Falling Down the best. HIs Wyatt Earp score is massive and also has some great cues (the 5/4 driving figure in "It All Ends Now" is wonderful).
Signs is also probably one of my faves because of the opening credits and Hand of Fate Parts 1 and 2. Excellent tracks.
Snow Falling On Cedars is a beautiful score although I cannot listen all the way through because I do find it meanders a bit. At least on disc.

This is one of my favorite scores. I immediately see the images when I hear the music!

I like james newton howard's work. Although I personally think it is not very original. the way he brings his simple themes out is very emotional and very touche sometimes. If I ever make a movie in mylife (absolutly impossible) James would be musican of choice to score it.

Maybe the simplicity is coming from his rock 'n' roll, Elton John days. To me, that isn't necessarily a bad thing, but rather a good thing. I think it's much more difficult to be simple than it is to throw it all on. Being simple and still sublime is the key.
I like many of the ones mentioned here, including the Village. I think the Village music does a good job of describing musically what is going on in the movie. Also good choice in selecting Hilary Hahn to be the musical voice of the main character in the film. What is done and the way in which it is done works within the context of what it is, imo.

Ok, where did you hear that? I am fully aware of what top composers get (give or take), but if you don't mind my asking, where did you get that from? If you don't want to make it public, than PM me, and I promise to keep it private.
Cheers.

Well, I couldn't find anything on VI, but nonetheless - NO WAY does a composer get 1.2 mil for a film on a 36 mil budget.

Right - but that budget was literally twice the budget of 'Snow' - I fail to see the comparison....

Because you failed to realise that I was addressing the second part of the sentence, not the first, when I mentioned a fee...!

Heh, ok we are not on the same page here.
The second part of the sentence was "NO WAY does a composer get 1.2 mil for a film on a 36 mil budget." That is what you were adressing, no? If not, my apologies for missing something here.
That still holds true - there is no way that any composer gets that kind of cash for a 36 mil budgeted film. Now, 'The Village' is different - why? Because, as I stated earlier, it has (had) literally TWICE the 'Snow' budget....

Yes, but this is what my original comment was adressed towards:

However, you say No WAY, I say that it would depend on who is going to persuade the money men to fund the project. I have no knowledge about Snow, but fees don't always depend on the pulling power the recipient has with the public.

AH...ok.
So, I was right - see?!?!?! I was missing something! LOL
So, you were saying that fee applied to 'The Village'; I mistook your comment as applying to 'Snow.'
Ok, my bad - I apologize....thowwy....:(
Tho I am sure the fee for 'Snow' was more than most people make in a year.....

I don't doubt it. However, I'm not sure that I could deal with all the cr*p that these guys have to cope with. I prefer to be left alone in a darkened room, only to emerge when the deed is done. Hang on, that might have been my days at the Soho Meat Market...!

I like him because he's not affraid to be small and intimate even if the picture is a 200million dollar summer blockbuster.
That takes guts.

Yeah, me too. I just wish that he'd turned down King Kong.

That was interesting to see.
Also note: $20,000 for midi file transfer. Must have been a lot of midi files, lol
...and compare that then to just $6000 for the musicians/orchestra.

If you look at the next page there (check the numbers at the bottom of the page) you'll see they spent alot more than $6000 for the orchestra... The $6000 is just what the conductor got! The total on the following page says $491,566 for the orchestra.
Also my guess about the MIDI files would be that they're not talking about a file transfer, but transferring from MIDI files to playable notation..?
Hey, if you keep going, it looks like they gave James Newton Howard $10,500 for 50 days of "living expenses" (not including accomodations or travel! those are listed separately...)
So basically he got to spent $5000 per month on food! He didn't even have to open his wallet and fork over some of that 1.3 mil! :D

Thanks, Matt. I didn't see that second page. Phew, that's a bit more in line and less shocking for the orchestra than $6000.
Midi... yeah, I'm sure that's transcribing and making the midi into something useable for the real players.

I think that's the orchestrator's job. MIDI transfer is more likely to be loading the MIDI files into templates for the orchestrators to work from. From my own experience it is a real bore (and waste of time) having to tidy up MIDI files before the orchestration process can get underway.

Yeah. Midi translation is for example taking the 10 files for vln 1 in a sequence and making it 1 file with the correct note values. The orchestrator then takes that file and makes a score that get's passed along to the music prep people to make parts.
