Hey everyone (or should that be anyone?!)
Just wondered if any of you good people have seen 'The Red Violin'. Music by John Corigliano.
I'm relistening to the soundtrack in amazement, as I'd forgotten how incredible it is. Apart from the fact that the film spans several continents and several hundred years, with music to match, the emotional impact of the score is almost unmatched by anything else I've heard. The writing is sublime, and the performance, particularly Josha Bell's (violin) is nothing short of a miracle!
Anybody seen or heard it?
And it's and excellent film.....but only if you like violins, which luckily, I do.

Hello there,
I was actually a composition student of John Corigliano's about five years ago and had the opportunity to watch the Red Violin with him while looking at his pencil score; it was amazing. In fact, I will be teaching film scoring with him, Jeff Rona, and Tom Haines at the Aspen Music Festival this summer. We're going to have a great time!
Cheers,

actually I hate the violin as a solo instrument (except for two players that I have heard), but found the story riveting and definitely in my top 20 films.

sounds cool !
Jeff Rona is a great guy. Do you know him in person ? Let me advise his book "The reel world - Scoring for Pictures" which gives a little insight about his very own way and thoughts, moving through all different kind of projects.

I prefer the cello to the violin. More resonance, depth and soulful in my opinion.

Yeah, I know him personally. I first worked with him in 2001 at the Aspen Music Festival. And, yes, his book is great!

Sheesh..whatever. Violins SUCK. The worst dude, the WORST. If your not writing exclusivly for hautboy and fagelocello.... well GOOD LUCK, my brother.
Oh, and James, if you see Johnny C, give him a message for me. Tell 'em "Large Marge" sent you.

No, you've got it the wrong way round. It's the violin that does the sucking. Could be an alternative avenue of income, maybe?
