nice topic :)
i am not surpirsed it being john williams at the number one spot
and what i say now is actually a good thing - not bad at all....
i like the way williams adds parts from his previous scores - more like he is adding his signature into a new score
for example there are parts from Home Alone - the main theme is adapated which created the main theme to Harry Potter
I like noticing things like these I guess
But anyays yes, he does deserve to be leading the way.
..... and its Williams leading the way in 1st place. 2nd place now with Elfman. oooh and followed closely behind with Zimmer in 3rd
What a race ladies and gentleman!

Yeah well Elfman deserved an Oscar for Edward Scissorhands but didn't even get nominated. Oscars don't mean much. This is a top 40 most powerful composers, maybe Morricone hasn't been eating his wheaties lately.

According to IMDB he's been eating his Italian Wheaties lately . . . and making royalties off of The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.

The FSM list is based mainly on box office, not quality—though sometimes the two do intersect.
Nice to see Carter Burwell and John Ottman on the list. Two of my favs.

I was wondering exaclty the same thing..
just noticed that if you look for some CD film music collection at HMV they are mostly of Williams Zimmer and Morricone..
think this list is mostly about the holllywood market and the box office..
it could be a great music on an average film.. but this is off topic I think
another strange thing is that Sakamoto is not there..
hey .. he won an oscar isnt it ?
another one missing ( that I think Elfman knwo quite well) is Nino Rota.. but probably few could remember him.. and being dead cannot run for a oscar anymore :(

that would open a big question..
is better to be a rich composer or a great artist... :(
mumble..difficult question.. expecially when you are just an artist..

Why not be both, like Charles Ives. He made a fortune in the insurance business while eschewing the traditional musical establishment, and wrote some of the greatest and most original music of any American composer. That's the way to do it.

I like Ives a lot myself. But there has been some speculation as to whether he changed or revised some pieces years after their initial conception. Still makes him innovative. However, Ives ran his own insurance business (I think it was handed down to him from his father) and that did allow him to write music the way he heard it.

First, there is no question he revised many of his works in later life as he stopped composing well before his death and sought to refine many of his earlier works; as he had been quoted saying "Nothing sounds right".
Secondly, he started his own insurance business with a friend in NY, not handed down to him by his father, which afforded him the time and luxury to write what he wanted and heard, with no financial pressure to please anyone but hinself with his music. A true original and arguably the greatest American composer of all time. Also, regarded as one of the great organists of his time.

;) ;) Gladiator was an incredible soundtrack I dont care what anyone says. Also my reason for Ennio being 4th is that I've recently got into his music. I've been a fan of Zimmer since the Lion King. Even if he no longer pumps out his own stuff. His old stuff is still a treat to the ears.

It's an interesting list... but I don't think this really represents anything meaningful besides how much money the films made.
If it was a top-40 list of "all time" film composers (and not just 2006) then I would think that Ennio Morricone would be on it... even if only for his highly memorable theme from "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly" which has been quoted/parodied so many times! (Have you seen the number of credited works he's got on IMDB? Talk about prolific...)
Henry Mancini should be on the top 40 of all time too... that guy was seriously influential and films today still borrow from or quote his music! If you look at IMDB you can see he's been pretty busy for a guy who passed away more than a decade ago.
Cheers,
- Matt

Counterpoint reminds us of a very important.....um...point! This IS a list of the "top" achievers for 2006. Had it been an all-time top list, Morricone would have to on that list (IMO) - The Mission is an all-time favorite of mine. And perhaps John Barry would be on that all-time list too.
