I keep seeing many people around here who dont
seem to have a grasp on Keyswitch patches and or DXF
patches. (DXF means Dynamic crossfade)

So i made a video showing how to use these things.

Hopefully, this will help some of you beginners learn how to
use these functions. :)

Thanks Todd

I have to say, the time and effort you put in to help others really proves how devoted you are to becoming a great composer.

Great talking with you and thanks very much for the video tutorial.

Will keep in touch.

Hi ya'll!

No problem at all actually. :) My pleasure.

I can tell you, it wasnt so long ago, that i didnt understand how
to do these particular functions either.

About 4 or 5 months ago, before i purchased Gold, i didnt know what
Keyswitching was. And i wasnt so sure how i was gonna do the Modulation
cc, without a controller. I didnt use Modulation for anything, cause up until
Gold, the only samples i had, didnt respond to it, other than that cheesy
vibrato, wich i never bothered with.

So i was thinking, it would have saved me alot of time in digging around
for info, if somebody would have just posted a simple video like this
demonstrating how to do it.

There's a saying that goes, "Treat others the way you'd like to be treated"

I do my best to stick to that philosophy. :D

Great stuff!

And you know, I already knew about mod-patches and key-switch patches - but the one thing I always ADORE seeing is how people actually go about composing.
I think I'm in the "performer" category - where I tend to do everything by recording the midi from a keyboard and then tweaking in a staff view.

Toddk,

I'm not up and running yet but thanks very much for this, in advance. That's a generous act. :)

Thanks for going to the trouble of making this. It's a Windows movie file, though, which means us Mac users can't view it (doesn't it?).

Oh, well...

Kind regards.

I've been on the hunt for an app - and found this: (<shrugs shoulders> haven't downloaded, yet.)

http://www.flip4mac.com/wmv.htm

ToddK - what a generous, giving thing to do for the S.O. community. Berklee online classes call them "show me" tutorials and they are immensely helpful in complimenting (and comprehending) written assignments. The Gold and Platinum GBs were a roaring success, but given that there are 6 (+) billion people on the planet, and this software such an extraordinary tool, I kept thinking: if folks could catch a glimpse behind the magic show via some real-time visual-audio handholding, there would be a few more zeros in the final tally.

Brains are wired differently. Some people need to see it, not just read it, although the new PDF tutorial is amazing! Ah, neurodevelopment function. The Learning Curve. Mind'ja, I have none of the software loaded, yet. The boxes are stacked on the table, over yonder.

Diving into the pool (in spirit only, thus far),
L.

Hi Toddk,

Any chance to get a quicktime (.mov, .mp4, .avid...) version of your .wmv for us, mac users? :)

ToddK

Hi Mac people!

There's a free converter for you guys actually. http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/software/Macintosh/osx/default.aspx

I have my own guitar forum, and we have alot of videos posted there.
And the Mac people have had no problems with this one.

Hope it works for you. If not, let me know and i will make a Quicktime.

Hi ToddK.

Thanks for posting this video clip. I have one question if you don't mind: Maybe I'm way off but don't you have to turn the "sustain" controller on before you can use the keyswitch? I have to do that, but maybe that's a Sonar and Silver thing...? Or maybe I'm waaaaay off... :)

Ha! Funny you mention that... The reason i havent made a Quicktime yet
is because to render it with Vegas, i have to have Quicktime installed
on my box, wich i really dont want to do.

But i suppose i'll have to do it.... :( I'll try to get it posted by tomorrow.

Ooops, sorry for it. Can you let me know what codec can you render without install Quicktime? Maybe divx? it'd work

BTW, Quicktime 7 (no avaiable to PC yet, but soon) is simply awesome. His new codec, HD 623, it's incredible

I do realize Mac's are the standard for video. No doubt about it.

Its no big deal. I dont think Quicktime will hurt anything.:)

Well, it seems the forces of nature are against me in my quest
to render a Quicktime file.

I installed the full version of Quicktime on my system, as i needed to for
Vegas to do so.

Upon attempting to render, i get an unknown error screen, and a crash.
This is exactly why i didnt want to install quicktime. :)
I quickly uninstalled quicktime after that happened.

Anyway, i am at the moment trying to render an MPEG 1 , but i cant
get the file under 70 megs or so.

Anybody care to give me some pointers on rendering MPEG's?

If i lower all the custom settings, the file is smaller, but the video
is completely unwatchable.

Sorry, i'm an audio guy, not a video guy...

I'm downloading it right now but it's going slow as h---. I guess that's because I have dial-up. Anyway, in spite of the downloading, and I just may never be able to complete it, I want to repeat what others have said. What you've done is an extremely generous and thoughtful thing to do. Thank you so much.

Hi TK,

I really sorry that crash in your PC :( . About the MPEG settings you can try lower the frames number (14 or 15) and the audio settings to mono, 8 bits

If you have more problems, please forget to make it, I'll download a wva reader, ok? Thanks again :)

No way man! Eric is a complete master!

As far as Spectrasonics, i honestly dont know what i'd do without
Trilogy Stylus and Atmosphere. I use them on everything it seems like.

Well, Trilogy, i literally use on everything. mmm, man its good...

Hey Todd, congrats on the video man, thats very thoughtful of you.

I once had to do some video tutorials and was going to suggest (if you havent already done it) next time to render your final video file at 5fps.

Because the screen doesnt move and the main focus is on your voice, it actually comes out alot smoother than expected. This will reduce the filesize dramatically.

Not mean to nitpick though! You've done many here a great service. :)

I have a question Todd. When you did the mod crossfade thing, does it gradually change velocity as well as volume, or is it just volume? I sequence with fruity loops (it has a piano roll and everything. very similar to cubase), and fruity loops doesn't have a mod tab or whatever, it only has volume, filter, pan, and some other stuff. In fruity loops i can do the swells, but the swells don't change in velocity, only volume, so this is a problem.

ToddK
06-06-2005, 12:12 PM
In the video, i do mention that, in a DFX patch, velocity has no effect.

A DFX patch is simply a soft played note, and a hard played note.

Mod wheel down, is the soft note, and as you move the wheel up, you
crossfade into the harder note. There's nothing going on with velocity there.

There's gotta be a way to draw modulation data in piano roll in FL.

You should post a question about that here, or at the FL forum.

Hey ToddK

Nice video !

But maybe I missed something, modulation isn't working for me, also with my midi keyboard
Here is a screenshot :

Thanks

However tho velocity doesn't work, you still have expression cc#11 to change "velocity", and you need that too, since most dxf patches are still way too hard even when cc#1 is set to 0 and they don't blend well with the rest, however you can make them really mellow, just as quiet as the non dxf patches by using expression as well. Or, so I think. :)
BTW, Does anyone ever use them for anything besides crescendo and dimmuendo?

-Ranietz-

To answer my own question: YES, I'm way off. Or a little off anyway. :)

You need to use the sustain on/off only on the ...LEG PDL KS instruments, and as far as I know those instruments exists only in Silver. No need to use the sustain on/off (C-64) on the other KS instruments (...MASTER KS).

Hoho, I learned something new today. :D

Hi guys, I just ordered EWQL Gold today and I'm really excited! I can already tell that parts of my knowledge will be helpful to some of you! There is a misconception that windows media files cannot be played on macs, but this is not the case! Microsoft has released Windows Media Player Mac for this very reason! It can be found here: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/software/Macintosh/osx/default.aspx

The only exception to this is the WMV3 codec (aka Windows Media Player 9 codec) which seems to be x86 specific or something like that and cannot run on Macs even with VLC or MPlayer (both of which I highly suggest as alternatives to Quicktime Player or Windows Media Player, as they are open source (free as in public domain!) and are very useful in opening almost anything; they can be found here: http://www.mplayerhq.hu/homepage/index.html and http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ . Get them fast before intellectual property (AKA garbage patenting) takes them down!)

Good luck,
Micah Fitch
PS: I'm looking forward to finding more video tutorials before my package arrives!
