Cinema paradiso is a rare piece of art....even Williams in the concerts that is doing in this periods includes some tracks of that amazing film score.....

I had the good fortune to meet and study with Morricone in Italy back in 1994 at the Chigiana Summer Academy. The guy was somehow very «monarchial» but hey, his music is simply from another world... Did learn about how he does things a bit. But mainly, how he approches a movie. Saw numerous examples of scores he did for Italian productions; all styles covered, believe me! From true electro-acoustic genre to real symphony orchestral type. Anyone remember «The Untouchables»?

from what i know and see (i'm Italian) morricone is a very serious person...u never see him around in tv and he is still at home writing music at 79 years old....i don't know what u mean with "monarchial" ... he may look like a reserved person but i mean listen to his music to understand what kind of guy he is....cinema paradiso is just an example to understand what's love for Ennio Morricone.....where are talking about a special person like great artists are....:o

Morricone - a serious person? Come on, the guy who scored Navajo Joe? Nuh-uh. Impossibile. Each time I listen to the title track a wide smile inevitably creeps up on my face. Also - the sung credits of Uccellacci e Uccellini - hilariously brilliant.

While there are several great Morricone scores that I could go on about, my first exposure was from a seldom-mentioned film called Days of Heaven. That soundtrack had a profound influence on my own writing at the time (early 80s). Anybody heard the score from that film? Anyobdy seen that film?

...he is a very reserved person ...this doesn't mean that he hasn't great emotions and is funny....

maybe you should read his interviews.. to understand better why .. and when he did that..

dont tell me now that all the things that Williams have done was amazing .. and dramatically serious.. :)

Yeah, yeah, I know. The best case of jolly Morricone caught on camera would be something like 'OK, I'll try to smile - but I don't promise anything'. I'm just saying, with all his outward seriousness, in privacy of his own house he probably constantly watches hk kung fu flicks from the 70s, bursting with laughter every 4 minutes (rounded down) and delights in posting silly remarks on various web forums.

That's my theory, which I possess the ownership of and which is mine and belongs to me.

there is a beautiful music from Morricone that's played by Pat Metheny and Charlie Haden ( the same than in your mix ( cinema paradiso )) on the album "beyond the missouri sky" I like a lot the Morricone , I think that noone could copy him because each music is different, with his touch but different, one of my favorite music is from a french movie called "le professionel" and I'm not sure that ennio composed all the music in cinema paradiso I think there is also his son.

Ennio Morricone is one of the all-time greats of film music. Certainly in the top 3 of effectiveness in film enhancement. I've been reading this thread with mild interest. So far, I'm amazed that none of you geniuses have not EVEN mentioned The Untouchables - with particualr emphasis on the opening titles - never mind the rest of the film.

The untouchables theme - one of my favorite film compositions. It was very effective in setting the tone for the rest of the movie.

Well, PaulR, I'm no genious but I did mention the Untouchables in the other thread about «Best emotional moment in a movie». Let's all agree that the fellow we are taking about, Morricone, comes very close to being a true musical genious... I'm not there quite yet....

You spelled 'genius' wrong. :D

I can't be bothered with threads that start off 'best emotional' anything. So I don't read them. Emotional always seems to be misinterpreted as something that involves Bambi. Emotional to me means the shower scene from Psycho - or the scene in The Night of the Hunter when Shelley Winters is discovered in the car under water - not some weepy crap.
