I just saw the movie for the first time last night, and have to say it wasn't bad. Was looking forward to the score more, and thought it was pretty decent. But did anyone else notice the direct rip from 13th Warrior prior to the last battle? I'm just curious as to why they did that? I can't see Harry Gregson Williams being responsible for that. Producers maybe? Just thought that was wierd, and totally made me question the rest of the score. Didn't mention in the credits (at least where it said who composed the music) that stuff from Goldsmith's score for 13th warrior was used. Kind of lame really.

Well actually it was credited in the credits as "Valhalla" by Jerry Goldsmith. My guess as to why it was used in the film is that it was probably a temp track for that scene, and either Ridley Scott or some producer didn't want to take it out. It definetely annoyed me too, mostly due to the fact that the music composed by Gregson-Williams for that scene is on the soundtrack album, and its great music. In fact, that scene was shown in a long trailer for the movie, and Gregson-William's score was used for that, and it worked perfectly. Although the Goldsmith theme works great in that scene too, its a problem for me because when I first saw that scene in the film, I immediately thought of 13th Warrior, which took my mind off Kingdom of Heaven. Luckily I still really enjoyed the film, especially Gregson-Williams' score. I thought it was one of the best of 2005, and defintetly should have been up for an oscar, along with Gregson-Williams' other great score of that year, Narnia.

Ridley Scott is notoriously bad for using other scores in his films. He pissed Goldsmith off by using cues from Freud in Alien, discarding much of Jerry's original work for his earlier film career music, along with Howard Hanson's 2nd Symphony.
He then completely chucked Goldsmith's Legend score for a magnificantly inferior (and dated sounding) Tangerine Dream score.

Wow Goldsmith had scored Legend? Too bad they ditched that. Would have loved to hear it. Doesn't suprise me though.

Get the DVD, it has the Goldsmith score on it. Plus, you can buy the score online or check out a local Barnes and Nobles (where I found my cd) of it.
I noticed it instantly. At first I couldn't believe my ears. I hate it when they do that, using music from other movies. They did the same in"Man on Fire", I think. Which was directed by Tony Scott.
I jumped up when I watched Kingdom of Heaven for the first time and that music started. I watch 13th Warrior a lot and have the soundtrack. It really hurts the film. But I guess Scott and the others had a reason for this.

One of the people behind the score told that R. Scott had the score recorded with the orchestral sections divided, so he could tweak them however he wanted to (use strings only, let brass in or out, ...)
