View Full Version : Syllable "on" & "off"

I can't seem to get this to work. I want to be able to send a control message to tell wordbuilder to stay on the current syllable, until the next controller tells it to move on to the note off.

I've assigned controller 21, with a value of 127 to trigger the "hold" feature, and a value of 0 to trigger the off.

As a test, a typed in the word "take", and played a little melody, wanting the "ta" to play the melody, and the the "ke" to be added on the release of the last note. Then, within my sequencer (Logic), I added the controller information, starting just before the first note was played.

But I keep getting the whole word (with the note off) for every note in the melody.

I have also tried just "ta" with a space then the "a", then a space, and another "a", etc... but it still sounds disjointed to my ears, and adding the legato attack doesn't really seem to help it "flow"

Have I misunderstood what's possible here?

A syllable is a set of letters surrounded by spaces or hyphens. The control message you are setting will cause choirs to sing the same syllable until you send it the release message.

'Take' is one syllable. You probably want this (in Votox):

Te-e-eEK

Play a note for 'Te', send the hold control message, play as many 'e' sounds as you want, then send the release control message, then the next note will sing 'eEK.'

Thanks for the reply Sam. I do appreciate it.

O.K. that does make sense now. By using your example, I have successfully gotten the "a" syllable to play as often as I want, with the control change inserted after the first note. And it really works well, and does "smooth out" the performance.

I can't seem to get the last syllable to trigger properly yet, but at this point, I'll assume it's a simple oversight on my part. I keep messing with it.

thanks again!

I'll just add in that when I have a middle sound I am holding across many notes, I make the vowel slurred legato and then in a piano roll view, I drag the end of every note to overlap ever so slightly with the beginning of the next note. That helps them overlap and slide into each other.

Hope that helps :)
