View Full Version : Optimizing SC & K2: Load multiple voices on one K2 instance?

Hello everyone,

I'm a mac Logic 7.1.1 user and I'm trying to optimize my system for Symphonic Choirs using K2. I have downloaded the LogicSATB and it works great, however using 4 separate kompakt/Kontakt instances seems to not be the best use of resources for this demanding library. Thus I'm wondering if its possible to cut this down in half though using Kontakt 2 and putting the Sopranos and Altos on one K2 using midi channels 1-5 for the sopranos and 6-10 for the Altos, and doing the same for the tenor and basses.

I have tried to set this up on my own through simply changing the midi channels in both K2 and WB, but it seems that changing the midi channels in WB globally effects the system. Is this true? Is there any way to achieve my goals? If not, is there any plan to update WB in the future?

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!
Jon

p.s. I am aware of the "womans choir" and "mens Choir" K2 multis, but they do not allow (to my knowledge) the alto and soprano parts to be independent in terms of lyric and timing. I'm hoping my "optimized" version will allow for this to happen, and still provide the best use of resources. Can this be done?

Why do you need multiple instances of Kontakt 2?

You have 8 instruments off one port, usually one per channel in Kompakt. You have four ports each with 16 instruments / channels in Kontakt 2. (Up to 64 voices).

Yes, kontakt 2 can load up to 64 instruments and has 4 midi ports of 16 channels each, but in my system, when I attempt to change the midi channel to port B, it says [not available], while the only available midi port is "A" from host. Maybe I'm missing something here?

Yes, you need to turn it on.

File [at top left of screen]
Audio / midi setup
Click on midi
Change your input / output interfaces as you see fit.

You might be missing "MIDI Yoke NT:" in the first place? It's free virtual midi cable software.

My pieces are written and played back in Sib 4. The ports are defined as playback devices (1 to 8 off by default) and the instruments in the mixer are given a port and midi channel. These map directly to K2. Whichever ports are turned on as playback devices in Sib are defined as above. The nki files loaded into K2 are then set to port n channel 1 to 16.

Inside of a host sequencer, I believe Kontakt 2 only has 16 MIDI channels. There can only be 16 channels on one MIDI port, and conceptually each plugin can only have one 'port.'

If you're using Kontakt 2 standalone, then you have access to all 64 MIDI channels, because you get 4 ports.

Is it possible to have four K2 plugins in a sequencer and allocate a different port to each?

In that case, since each K2 is its own instance, each one has its own 16 channels.
