Hello,
This is my first post :)...I'm interested in creating drumlines such as from marching bands. What's the best way of doing this? Can you give me some tips? I currently have Sonar 6 Producer, Project 5, Reason 3, EWQLS0 Silver Pro XP, QL Ra, QL Colossus.
Hardware wise I have a Novation Remote SL 61 and thinking about getting a Korg padKontrol. Do I have all that I would need or are there any other sounds I should get such as Stormdrum. Anyone with experience in reproducing these sounds and can provide some advice will be appreciated :)
Thanks alot!

Hi,
This is a tough question. I had to write a piece a few years ago that was supposed to sound like a high school orchestra. It was quite a challenge because I didn't really have any marching band sounds. I did talk to someone at Pearl about making a sample CD years back but if they ever did, I never stumbled across it.
The only way I was able to accomplish coming close, was to layer different percussion sounds and play with the EQ until it just felt right. It was hours of work, but I was happy with the result. One thing I used a lot was taiko drums with no reverb in the background as a backup for floor toms and quads. It added that bottom end that made it sound more like a line instead of a few players. I had to let up a bit in using the sound for what it was supposed to be, like a conga for example, layered with a couple toms, etc.
I am not sure if the Roland V-Drum brain might have something like that these days. It hs been a while since I played on a V-Kit.
Good luck - let me know what works for you!

Thanks for the reply. Funny, I was also experimenting with taiko drums. So I guess I'm in the right path :)
I was also poking around and ran into VDL 2 (Virtual Drumline) from tapspace.com. It uses Kontact as the interface. Seems promising.

Hi Balbs,
That sounds interesting. I guess there just isn't much need for anyone to take the time to make those kinds of sounds. I can understand that but it sucks when that is what you really need. Please let me know when you get it finished. i am anxious to see what you come up with.

That VDL is the worst sounding thing i have ever heard in my entire life.
-I would rather manually program something from your EWQL library ;)
