I love listening to this radio show .. http://www.exploringmusic.org/

and this week has been focusing on Samuel Barber and must say that cat could write some tunes!
I've heard his Adagio for Strings before but had no idea of all his other stuff. Anyone else experience
more of his music?

Yeah he's my favorite composer at the moment. Overture for the School for scandal being my favorite piece. That string melody is amazing!!!

I can hear a lot of Barber in John williams music too, not sure how much of an influence he was but i can hear similarities.

how do you actually listen to that program? are the broadcasts saved so you can listen whenever you want?

Dont use internet radio so im not very familiar with it.

cool, I admit I'm 'discovering' Barber and he rocks!

Here in Dallas, it's on WRR 101 at 7 p.m. check around, there should be some streaming of it somewhere, very, very educational show.

Just seen The Elephant Man, the Adagio works great there. It has been used in how many films...? Imdb has lost track of it, as they don't credit Barber for this film...

For my high school graduation - more than 35 years ago - we were allowed to pick the music that would accompany us onstage to receive our diplomas. I picked Barber's "Summer Music" (for wind quintet). It felt to me like the perfect doorway leading to the next phase of my life.

His violin concerto is great too.

yep, i just got a cd with his violin and piano concerto on it.

They are both excellent of course but i really like the violin concerto, and im not usually fond of them.

The part in the first movement where the whole string section comes in to play one of the melodys is just incredible,

This Fall the New York City Opera will be presenting Barber and Menotti's opera "Venessa"
If you're in New York this November you should not miss this rare gem. It is really filled with beautiful melodies even if the story is a bit melodramatic -but what do you expect it's opera after all !!! Barber's 3 operas are rearly performed which makes this stageing a real treat.:D
