Hi everybody,

please share some knowledge on something I'm really struggling with. When I import a MIDI score from Sibelius to cubase I notice that there are still a lot of volume changes and phrasing to be made in order to better shape the music. Spending time on almost every note is so time-consuming, and drawing the velocity by hand is not so great, especially on long orchestral scores .... is there a way to control velocity with an external command from my keyboard knobs? I don't understand what is the midi controller number for this but I know that it would save a great deal of effort to just record velocity changes with a simple finger movement (like for expression) !!!

Many thanks for for any advice... take care,

Actually, I think he knows what expression is. He wants velocity to act like expression. But it can't. It's not assigned to a MIDI CC# - it's velocity. That's what it IS.

Velocity is how hard you strike the keys on a keyboard. This translates to volume. There's no other way to record velocity, other than editing velocity.

Except, maybe, to use MIDI Munge.

I don't have the time to test it out, but I've used MIDI Munge for all kinds of things. Basically, MIDI Munge is used to assign MIDI CC's to other MIDI controller data. For example, I used to work in a host that had no aftertouch support. So, in order to edit aftertouch data, I simply used MIDI Munge to change aftertouch to CC#50, and by editing CC50 data, I'd be editing aftertouch data. And you can probably use MIDI Munge to assign velocity to MIDI CC#50 or whatever.

There's some info and a pseudo-manual on the site to explain how MIDI Munge works. It's a complicated UI, but easy to use, really.

Thanks guys for your advice, I thought that there would not be any specific controller, but I'll try your solution anyway tomdini...

Many thanks for sharing ...

Just a note... I don't use a midi controller at all, and input every note by hand in my sequencer. For drawing envelopes, however, I use a Wacom tablet and pen. I bought one for my girlfriend to use for artwork and photo editing, but I'm getting about as much use out of it adjusting the expression and velocities of my VI's....

I think it ran about $100 bucks for an entry level, but it works great.
