Anyone here listen to the composer John Adams?
I just got "Naive and Sentimental Music" and absolutely LOVE it!!
Its rare to find something in this style i like so much after one or two listens, its just incredible.
So what other works should i get by him? im mainly interested in the orchestral stuff.
"on the transmigration of souls" seems to get great reviews but im generally not into that kind of operatic thing. I might check it out though.

One of my top 2 most admired composers is Adams (the other is Ryuichi Sakamoto, besides the old masters of course)
NOTE - I wrote 'composer', not 'film composer'
I have, listen to and study ...
Harmonielehre, for orchestra
Concerto for Piano 'Century Rolls'
Slonimsky's Earbox
Lollapalooza
Short Ride in a Fast Machine, fanfare for orchestra
and some others
check out his site -

and read his book -

Death of Klinghoffer. Very emotional story. Incredible music. Basically in a nut shell a man in a wheelchair is murdered by terrorists on a cruise ship during its hijacking. There is somewhat of a political controversy around the opera. Based on a true story.

You have forgotten "Harmonium" a two parts piece: "Negative love" and "Because I can not stop for Death" based on an Emily Dickinson poem.
Pure poetry....
I has been selected by S. Simon Rattle ( BTW really not my fvourite conductor, but specialized in contemporay) as one of the best works of the XX century.

i met him after a concert he gave in Detroit a few years back (actually 2000). Very nice man. He spoke with me about music for 10 minutes after the concert.

"Common Tones in Simple Time". People call it minimalist, but to me it sounds as much like impressionism as music can. Kinda like Monet, via orchestra.
And the final (3rd, I think?) mvt of "Harmonielehre" is a knockout. The sort of piece i'd give my left nut to hear live.

I just got a CD with;
1: short ride in a fast machine
2: the chairman dances
3: Harmonium
I like what i hear with Harmonium so far, its going to be a grower i think.
The other two piece havnt really hit me, but ill give them more listens.

I'll add "Shaker Loops" for string septet or string orchestra to the recommended list. It's a relatively early piece, but one of my favorites among his works.
