Hello all,

Currently, I am working off an EMachines AMD Sempron 2GHZ machine running Windows XP and I seem only to be able to find 16 MIDI channels internally to run with Sonar Studio 6. In my experiences with outboard gear, I have a MIDIMAN 2x4 MIDI box that allows me 4x16 MIDI Channels out to different units and my settings in Sonar recognize each one as an individual output that I can set. So using the outboard gear plus the 16 inside, I actually have 5x16 channels. Of course, I find these days, I am getting far away from tone generators.

Does anyone know of a way of incresing INTERNAL MIDI ports for use with virtural instruments? I would love to have the flexibility without burning the tracks from MIDI to audio constantly to complete a piece of music.

As always, thanks everyone! :)

Maple Virtual MIDI Cable (http://www.hurchalla.com/Maple_driver.html) will give you four more ports (4x16, both in and out ports). It's free.

MIDI Yoke (http://www.midiox.com/) will add 8 ports. As far as I can tell, you have to use it in conjunction with the MIDI-Ox driver, which is only free for non-commercial pruposes. A commercial license is on sale right now for $50.

Well, internally, you are unlimited.

You can have as many VSTi's and midi tracks your system can do. 16 channels is just based on the midi protocol for what 1 VSTi can do max per midi port.

Outside of the host within the same machine either FXteleport or Midi yoke will work, but the VSTi still has to get in.

FXT will allow you to route outside your host and right back in without anything.

Thanks Lex,
Getting the VST's in are the easy part for me. The problem was that if I had two or three running, for example, I only had one MIDI channel 1 and so on. If I tried to assign 1 to RA and another 1 to Colossus, Sonar would get completely confused so I was looking for a way to have a setup such as MIDI 1A, 2A 1B, 2B, etc. Looks like Virtural MIDI Cable will work though.

Thanks!

There should be no reason to do that.

If you have RA with Kompakt, it holds 8 midi ports.

So set it for channel 3, output RA VST, ect.

I have run mulitple Kontakts(16 channels), single synths ect without issue.

I know there are people who do it as well and don't need Midi Yoke to do it.

Thanks again, Lex

I experimented with this a bit and found exactly what I did not expect. I did not realize that you could use MIDI channel 1 on more than one VI at a time. I must have set things up differently when I had tried this awhile back.

I am once again limited only by my creativity - SWEET!

Stefan,

If I read your post from start to finish I find it funny what you said because you also say "Don't believe everything you think..." sounds to me you should take your advice and start believing in your skills. I am sure you have some and there is always room for more development no matter how much you know.

I have doubted myself many times over the years and especially after hearing some of the brilliant compositions here on the forums. I would think, "Geez, can I really compete on this level? Am I ever going to be good enough?" Well, yes! I am finally starting to get some fantastic opportiunities thrown my way and you will too!!!

Stay positive and keep bulding your talents, my friend...
