I liked a lot the previous post about "John Adams". I learned much thingns that were unknown to me. Really interesting the idea and the comments.
So I shall start a new thread about E. Rautavaara. He started as serial and dodecaphonist composer. But in his latetest works, he has taken his own aproach to neo-classicism: "Just beauty for beauty". I use to hear to his "Angel of Light" and his "Cello concerto" almost every week. And "Cantus Articus" from tiime to time, (Birds included in the simphony).
Just like to know if some of you are also intested in this Finnish contemporary composer.
I found on his late style as a return to the esthetic of Sibelius or even the orchestration of the better Bruckner (Listen at his "Third Simphony" for instance).
Nice to share this space with all of you. Thanks for your feedback.

Eino-Juhani Rautavaara rules! "Cantus Arcticus" is mind blowing.
There are actually quite a lot of interesting neo-classical composers in Finland but unfortunately most of them aren't that well known anywhere else. Except perhaps Kaija Saariaho.

Thanks for posting luima, never heard of this composer and I always enjoy discovering new composers out there. Do you have any links to examples of his works? I will do a google seach and see what I can find.

Hi Gravehill.
I did not know at "Kaija Saariaho" but IŽll shall take a look at its biography and work analisis in the internet. IŽd like you tell me what are his most valuable works and maybe I can make a request at "Amazon", you find there almost everything in music.
Last time I requested in a local store about Takemitsu it took more than three months to arrive.
Thanks, I have tried to enter your page but is veryyy... slow . So IŽll try tomorrow and hear at your works. I shall comment you.

Hi Dewey,
I was almost to talk to you as "George", but in your web I knew by sure that you are not him.
My advice if you want to hear something on CD qualilty, is to make a list of your newest wishes and request it from Amazon.com, It is worth IMHO, quick and secure. and if you have several items in the order , the transports are insignificant.
BTW. My favoute record is from UNDINE: "Angel of Light and Annunciations" by the Helsinky FO.
Also from UNDINE "Symphonies 4. 5 AND Cantus Articus" by Max Pommer and the Leipzig RSO.
Hope you like it. If you are also Cello fan, the concert is extraordinary in the thechnique and interpretation.
Regards
Luis
BTW. You can also buy the scores at "Di-arezzo" Score Shop, as I did some time ago, usually get out of stock. They had almost his complete works.

From Kaija Saariaho, I think "Private Gardens" would be a safe bet for starters. It's got quite a lot of electronics, operatic female vocals and Japanese percussion thrown in the mix. "Graal Theatre" is a good choice as well. In general her style is less symphonic as Rautavaara, and leaning more towards ambient and such.
In case you like "Private Gardens" and won't mind some added chaos and confusion, the classical works from John Zorn come pretty close. There are some similarities in their style and in the general "feel" of their pieces.
I've had some server problems lately so that might be why my homepage is a bit slow. I hope to have it fixed soon. I also have some stuff at www.myspace.com/chaosresearch .

DonŽt forget Magnus Lindberg, a true genius! Also good friend with Essa-Pekka Salonen, they went to Sibelius academy together.
